Big Mouthhas come to an end with season 8, but the show does leave behind some unanswered questions.Big Mouthseason 8sees the likes of Jessi, Nick, Andrew, Missy, and Matthew head off to high school for the last ten episodes of the show. While there are plenty of familiar voices inBig Mouthseason 8’s cast, including Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, and Ayo Edebiri. There were also new additions made to the cast beyond the familiar faces.

Throughout the show, audiences fall in love with these characters and their respective stories. However, some arcs are left unfinished or aren’t tackled at all, which leaves viewers confused, especially as this is the final installment ofBig Mouth. WhileBig Mouth’s series endingis a fitting climax for everyone involved, the show fails to answer some important questions.

A group of students, Coach Steve, and Maury watching The Masked Principal in the hallway of Bridgeton Middle in Big Mouth.

7Where Is Montel? (& Are They Still A Shame Wizard?)

Connie & Maury’s Child Doesn’t Return In Season 8

There are severalHuman Resourcescharacters inBig Mouth, but Montel is the only one who is born into the parent show.A major subplot inHuman Resourcesfocuses on how Montel discovers they want to be a Shame Wizard, rather than a Hormone Monster, something their parents struggle to understand at first. Despite Montel bursting out of Maury (quite literally) and into Connie’s arms inBig Mouthseason 6, they are surprisingly nowhere to be seen in season 8.

Montel’s not appearing is strange considering their prominent role in both shows and the fact that they are the child of two of the most important characters. They are also missing inBig Mouthseason 7, so it’s even odder that the writers don’t bring them back for the show’s final outing. Viewers wanted to know more about Montel as a Shame Wizard, their time in higher education, and just who they are now that they’re a fully-grown being.

Jay’s mom, Jenna Bilzerian, sharing she has a secret daughter in the Principal’s office in Big Mouth season 3 episode “Girls Are Angry Too."

6Who Is The Masked Principal?

Bridgeton Middle’s Enigmatic Principal Is Never Revealed

Despite the manytheories about who the Masked Principal is inBig Mouth, the show surprisingly never gives an answer. It’s a little disappointing, consideringthis running gag has been going on since season 4,but not that surprising either. Throughout the show, the Masked Principal repeatedly tries to convince viewers and students alike that they are, in fact, director Roman Polanski.

Of course, this is a dark joke, considering Polanski’s history, but that’s alsoBig Mouth’s humor. It could have been hilarious to see someone like Leore Paulblart, Rabbi Paul Blart’s adult son, as the Masked Principal. However, he instead ends up being the Ponytail killer. It would’ve also been great if it turned out to be Principal Barron, the original headteacher, especially as she spends so long counting down the days to her retirement. But alas, unfortunately, this mystery is left unsolved.

Missy reminiscing about Devon, watching a memory of him and Charles Lu, in the Big Mouth season 8 finale “The Great Unknown.”

5How Does Coach Steve Have Two Hands Again?

In theBig Mouthseason 7 episode, “The Bad Hookup,” Coach Steve is completely consumed by the Bad Mitten, his odd and aggressive alter-ego puppet. When he crosses paths with his former love, Jay’s Mom, once again, the deranged woman is not impressed by the Bad Mitten, and shoots Steve’s hand off with a shotgun. Whilemost animated shows use a floating timeline, which means life-changing events like these usually aren’t canonized,Big Mouthis different.

Steve isn’t really a part ofBig Mouthseason 7’s ending, which makes sense, considering the penultimate episode focuses on everyone’s summer vacation, and the finale sees them attend their first day of high school. But when he unexpectedly appears in season 8’s premiere at Bridgeton High, now as Nurse Coach Steve, he suddenly has two hands again. He doesn’t appear to be wearing a prosthetic or glove, and the Bad Mitten is nowhere in sight,so what happens to Steve’s hand? While this is only a little detail, it’s one I hoped would be acknowledged in the final season.

4Who Is Jay’s Mom’s Daughter?

Jenna Bilzerian Reveals A Secret Child In Big Mouth Season 3

One of the most frustrating unanswered questions fromBig Mouthseason 8 can be split into multiple queries. During a meeting between the Bilzerians and the Gloubermans in the season 3, episode 2 “Girls Are Angry Too,” Jay’s mom, Jenna, suddenly announces she has a secret daughter. The following installments ofBig Mouthfail to acknowledge this, and, surprisingly, the final season doesn’t reference it.It’s not just a case of who Jenna’s secret daughter is, but it’s also worth asking whether the child is even real at all.

Considering Jenna Bilzerian’s drinking habits, which makes it nearly impossible for her to remember the three sons she lives with, there’s a very good chance the secret daughter didn’t exist in the first place. There’s also the theory that Lola and Jay are actually siblings, but seeing asBig Mouthseason 8 sees the pair reunite (and split, yet again), it’s unlikely this is true. Jenna is such an enigma who knows more about her husband’s dodgy dealings than it appears, so it’s a shame this story isn’t revisited and wrapped up properly.

Jessi looking sad as she watches Greg and Caitlin fawn over Delilah in Big Mouth.

3What Happens To Devon?

Voice Actor Jak Knight Passed Away In 2022

While it was always unlikely Devon would return inBig Mouthseason 8, it’s still a little disappointing that his arc doesn’t get a proper end. Jak Knight, who voiced Devon, died in 2022. The character appears in the background of scenes in season 7, but doesn’t speak, yet in season 8, he’s nowhere to be seen.Missy does see a vision of Devon and Charles Lu while reminiscing on her middle school days in the finaleand says she misses him, but the show doesn’t explain what happened to him.

While I think it’s a fitting tribute, I wish I could know the fate of the character, especially as he is part of some major storylines

Maybe Devon simply goes to another high school, or the show could easily make a joke about him finally succumbing to the fact that he is secretly an old man and dies of old age. But alas,Big Mouthonly offers a respectful nod to both Devon and Knight, and nothing more. While I think it’s a fitting tribute, I wish I could know the fate of the character, especially as he is part of some major storylines, like his marriage to Devin and Missy discovering her racial identity.

2Why Is Judd So Attached To Honeydew’s Son?

Nick’s Brother Shares An Intense Bond With His Drug Dealer’s Child

In season 7, episode 4 “Day Tripping,” Nick and Andrew follow Judd to New York in the hopes of scoring drugs, so that they can be seen as more mature by Leah’s high school friends.Nick grows jealous of Judd’s relationship with Melon Ball, the son of relaxed hippy drug dealer Honeydew, especially because he can’t understand why his brother shows so much affection to a random child. While Judd denies it when Nick questions him, there isn’t any proper confirmation that he isn’t Melon Ball’s father.

There’s obviously some sort of connection between Judd and Honeydew, but it’s unclear exactly what it is.Judd is around 18 inBig Mouthseasons 7 and 8, so he’s still in high school, which is apparent when Andrew asks him about his fight against Pumbaa before the first day. Therefore,it’s possible he’s Melon Ball’s dad, especially as the young boy shares a resemblance to Judd.Even though Honeydew is simply a one-off character in season 7, I hopedBig Mouthwould maybe acknowledge Judd’s bond with the child, even if it didn’t confirm his parentage.

1How Are Caitlin & Greg Handling Being Parents To Delilah?

Jessi Gets A New Baby Sister In Big Mouth Season 6

A major subplot in the later seasons ofBig Mouthis Jessi’s father, Greg, meeting Caitlin at Trader Joe’s and the later birth of their child, Delilah. WhileJessi struggles with the idea of her dad having a new family and pushing her aside, she eventually bonds with Delilah and is a great big sister. She has a brief awkward moment in season 7 where she can’t stop ogling Caitlin while breastfeeding, but this is eventually forgotten about. However,Big Mouthseason 8 completely drops Delilah.

In fact, Greg only appears while he’s with Shannon, either at the condo borrowing a phone charger or attending Jessi’s debate meetings.

AlthoughJessi moves back in with Shannon, and so she isn’t around Delilah as much,it’s odd that the baby isn’t mentioned. Caitlin briefly appears during the mother’s musical number, but there’s no sign of Delilah. In fact, Greg only appears while he’s with Shannon, either at the condo borrowing a phone charger or attending Jessi’s debate meetings. I would’ve loved to see more of Jessi as a big sister, and to witness Greg attempt to be a better parent a second time around, butBig Mouthonly had so much time to wrap up every plot.
