At the San Diego Comic-Con, creator and star Quinta Brunson teases a groundbreaking format forAbbott Elementaryseason 5. It was recently announced thatAbbott Elementaryseason 5will premiere on ABC on Wednesday, October 1. It will pick up after a relatively quieter conclusion to the fourth installment, which bid farewell to some of the older students.

But as the Emmy-winning comedy moves into veteran status, it has gradually tweaked its format of a documentary crew silently following the events that unfold at the titular Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. That is confirmed to continue in an upcoming episode, which Brunson recently revealed.

Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams), Ava Coleman (Janelle James), Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson), and Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti) standing in a line in Abbott Elementary season 4, episode 18.

At this year’s Comic-Con, withScreenRantin attendance, Brunson mentions thatAbbott Elementaryseason 5 will feature an episode at a live sporting event. Brunson, who plays Janine Teagues, did not go into specifics. But she mentioned that the episode would make sports fans happy. Check out the tweet below (viaLaughing Place):

What This Means For Abbott Elementary Season 5

Sports Has Always Been A Huge Part Of The Show

Part of the fact thatAbbott Elementaryhas gotten so big has meant that it has featured celebrity cameos, ranging from Bradley Cooper to Kevin Hart. But more personal surprise appearances have come about thanks to Philadelphia sports icons, whether it’s Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts or even Philly mascots.

The cameos can sometimes strain credulity, but they do help to establish thattheAbbott Elementarycast of charactersare big sports fans. Melissa is arguably the biggest fan among the bunch, with a running gag of a gambling fandom that runs right along with her avid support of local teams.

All of this means that the living filming episode will feel less like a gimmick, becauseit is rooted in what fans know about the characters. It could be fun to see how Melissa handles being in the situation versus the almost always upbeat Janine. There’s potential for comedy there, not just a concept in itself.

They’ll Make It Work

Later seasons are exactly when shows should start to experiment with the format. It keeps the series feeling fresh and makes the core location feel a little rejuvenated when the show returns to it, coming off theAbbott Elementaryseason 4 finale.

Previously,Abbott Elementaryalready broke ground by having a crossover episode with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
