One question that has always bugged me aboutSeinfeldis how Kramer (Michael Richards) ever managed to make enough money to support himself, but I think I’ve figured it out. To some, the main character ofSeinfeld, to others, the greatest sidekick ever, and to all, a keystone of the legendary sitcom, there’s no one like Kramer.

Cosmo Kramer lives across the hall from Jerry and frequently bursts into his life by literally bursting through the doorway, generally armed with some hare-brained idea or poorly thought-out question. Sometimes Kramer manages to wrangle the rest of the main cast into his idea, and sometimes he’s off on his own.

Kramer (Michael Richards) and Newman (Wayne Knight) examine a glass bottle in Seinfeld.

Unlike Jerry, who is a comedian; Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), who was a copy editor, then a personal assistant, then an editor again; and George (Jason Alexander), whose professional life is hilariously unstable;Kramer doesn’t seem to have a job. Yet, he seems to get on just fine, so where does his money come from?

Everyone Is Confused About How Kramer Earns His Money

Popular theories abound on the internet that claim to know where Kramer gets his money from. One popular theory is that Kramer is the recipient of a large inheritance. In season 4, episode 16, “The Shoes”,Jerry remarks that Kramer received a “ton of money” at some point earlier in his life.

Another theory is that he divorced a wealthy woman, and he received half of her money. Still, there are even more out-there theories, like Kramer is a drug dealer using Newman (Wayne Knight) as his money guy. He’s also held dozens of odd jobs. Perhaps he’s just managed to rake in more than anyone would guess.

The Likeliest Way Kramer Got His Money Is From Selling An Invention Before Seinfeld Started

Kramer Has The Confidence Of Someone Who Has Succeeded In Business Previously

As fun as those theories are, I believe that the real answer is this theory.Kramer has plenty of schemesover the course ofSeinfeld, and some of them are even genius. He’s made money on Calvin Klein ads, horse bets, and more. Who’s to say that Kramer has only just started trying to get-rich-quick?

For one, this would explain why Kramer struggles to hold a 9-5 type of job; he’s not used to it.

Kramer has probably been inventing things long before Jerry came along, andit’s more than likely one of his inventions or services netted him either a pretty profit or was sold for an impressive sum. For one, this would explain why Kramer struggles to hold a 9-5 type of job; he’s not used to it.

This would also help explain why he seems so confident and tenacious when it comes to pitching and selling his inventions and ideas. You would be too if, at one point, you sold something so valuable it’s been keeping you on easy street since. Theory or not,Seinfeldnever explained Kramer’s money, so I’m taking the liberty.
