Owen Is An IRA Member Who Comes To Work For Nucky
Charlie Cox appeared in the beloved HBO crime dramaBoardwalk EmpireasOwen Sleater, an Irish immigrant and an IRA member who has an affair with Margaret (Kelly Macdonald)while working his way up Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) organization. Owen is a recurring character in season 2 and a main cast member in season 1.
Sleater becomes Nucky’s driver and bodyguard, a good use of his talents, as he tells Nucky that what he’s best at is making people stop “Whatever it is you don’t want them to be doing.” He’s a dangerous man, though he may not look it. The chink in his armor comes from his feelings for Nucky’s wife.
Both from Ireland, Margaret and Owen have a connection, eventually beginning an affair that leads to Margaret getting pregnant. Cox plays both sides of the character extremely well. Owen’s cold and violent when he’s with Nucky, but becomes impossibly charming with Margaret, making for a flavorful character.

Don’t make the mistake of assumingBoardwalk Empireis just about gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s. Admittedly, it is gangsters in the Prohibition Era, but the series is much more unique. It serves as a historical accounting of that time period in American history, withan eye more toward the American melting potthan anything else.
While many characters inBoardwalk Empireare based on real historical figures, Owen Sleater is entirely fictional.
Booze, bootlegging, and gang wars are a big part of the series, butBoardwalk Empireis also an examination of how, in this “rich” time of American history, poor and immigrant classes were struggling to survive, and those with some social mobility had many barriers placed in front of them.Boardwalk Empireis worth watching every season.
