Classicsci-fimovies are remade all the time, but it’s a little less common for cult classics within the genre to be reworked into a TV show - which is what happened with one project in 2016. While the original story in question probably doesn’t belong in the upper echelon ofsci-fi movie masterpieces, it’s still a great watch.

AlthoughI would highly recommendWestworldto all sci-fi fans, it’s important to be prepared for the fact that the show ends relatively unceremoniously. While the unintended series finale does start to wrap up certain storylines, it’s quite clear the writers had more planned for a season 5 that, sadly, didn’t happen.

HBO’s sci-fi show isn’t a wholly original concept. Instead, it’s an adaptation/reimagining of the 1973 movie of the same name. The show adopted the movie’s general premise and loosely based its new story on the feature-length cult classic. WhiletheWestworldmovie still holds up relatively well today, there are parts of it that feel a bit outdated.
Still, even accounting for how old the movie is,HBO’s version ofWestworldis way better than the original. The movie’s 90-minute runtime means the world it creates isn’t able to be fully explored. Because HBO’s iteration of the story is on-screen for significantly longer, it has the advantage of spending huge amounts of time acknowledging every nook and cranny ofWestworld’s titular location and associated canon.
