Andorseason 2 may have created a potential plot hole regarding the events ofRogue One: A Star Wars Story. The recentStar Warsshow covers the pivotal years precedingRogue One, featuring the origins of the Rebellion and Cassian Andor’s role with the forces on Yavin. However, a handful of other Rebel characters share the spotlight as well, including one who was seemingly close to Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera.

Saw Gerrera was the ever-paranoid leader of the Partisans. InRogue One, the Rebellion wished to meet with Gerrera following leaked intel about a secret Imperial superweapon. This proved difficult, as Gerrera and the Alliance had cut ties due to Saw’s mistrust and his extreme methods. However, someStar Warsfans have pointed out sinceAndorseason 2 that the Rebels potentially had an easier means of connecting with Saw other than Jyn Erso.

Star Wars' Saw Gerrera and Jyn Erso from Rogue One

Hoping to corroborate their information based on what Saw had learned from a defected pilot, the Rebellion broke Jyn Erso out of an Imperial prison to join Cassian Andor on his mission to meet with Gerrera on Jedha. Jyn was raised by Gerrera for a time after her mother was killed and her father,Galen Erso, was taken to work for the Empire. However, Saw abandoned Jyn when she was a teenager.

Regardless of her connection to Galen, the Rebellion using Jyn to try and get to Saw was a definite gamble. Likewise, all the effort to rescue her is even more odd when one considers Wilmon Paak. Like Cassian Andor, Wilmon was a member of Luthen Rael’s network who joined the Yavin forces, though he spent time with Saw’s Partisans before that, teaching them how to safely steal volatile rhydonium.

“Wilmon was already on Yavin and could have left with Cassian and K-2SO immediately…”

InAndorseason 2,Saw Gerrera and Wilmon darkly bonded over the call to rebellion (while breathing rhydonium fumes). As such, it does make one wonder why the Rebels didn’t just send Wilmon to meet with Gerrera on Jedha instead of Jyn inRogue One. After all, Wilmon was already on Yavin and could have left with Cassian and K-2SO immediately.

Jyn Was Probably Still Necessary To Get Through To Saw Gerrera

There Are A Few Possible Reasons

Although it’s still odd, one can also make some strong conjectures about why Jyn was still needed inRogue One.Firstly, we don’t know why Wilmon left the Partisans, despite Saw seemingly taking the boy under his wing. It isn’t shown inAndorseason 2, though perhaps there was some sort of falling out that motivated Wilmon to join the Alliance on Yavin.

If that’s the case, perhaps Saw’s mistrust of anyone from Yavin wouldn’t have prevented a meeting despite their history. Likewise, Galen Erso was part of the leaked intel, so perhaps the Rebels were hoping Jyn could have provided new intel they didn’t already know.Obviously, the real reason is that Wil wasn’t yet introduced in theStar Warsgalaxy, though it’s an interesting plot wrinkle to think about nevertheless.
