Nintendo’sAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis a bastion for creativity, with players able to reimagine their deserted islands in just about any way through a combination of custom design patterns, terraforming, and outdoor decorating. Much of that creativity has been channeled into referencing and recreating other pieces of media, some of which has come from the original creators like a recentMTVJersey Shoresocial media post.
One hallmark that likely resonates with plenty of people currently playingNew Horizonsis the Nickelodeon animated television seriesAvatar: The Last Airbenderthat aired between 2005 and 2008. The show becameavailable on the streaming service Netflixearlier this month, and as a result someAnimal Crossingfans have been rewatching it during quarantine and incorporating it into their games.

Of all theAvatar: The Last Airbenderposts uploaded to the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit within the last week, much of the focus has been on a zen location called the Northern Water Tribe’s Spirit Oasis seen during the concluding episodes of the first season. Reddit users shdycnnn, illni, and demonica12 have all posted renditions of this secluded pond made inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonssince the show began streaming.
Avatarcreations have not been exclusively related to the Spirit Oasis, though that is likely seeing more frequency on account of players binging through the first season of the show. Some ideas were created well before its streaming began, much like the series has seen play on other creative outlets likeMedia Molecules’Dreams. Reddit user ItsPronouncedOiler posted a take on one of the most infamously emotional scenes from Season 2 last month, for instance.
AlthoughNew Horizonsplayers have been able to recreate scenes fromAvatarand other cultural landmarks likeStanley Kubrick’s horror movieThe Shining, other fans have instead created objects and locations inspired by the show. The Internet is full of custom patterns and outfits that let players turn their characters into Aang, Katara, Zuko, and otherAvatarmainstays, and Reddit users theglowingmonkey and BackToClassics have posted creations themed after the Fire Nation.
Player-made creations are one of the major aspects ofAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsthat have kept the game alive since its release on March 20, but its developers have also been releasing new content over time. It’s currently believed thatGyroids will return in a future update, which should add even more means for players to design interesting islands.
