The Masters of Evil Discover The Impossible City’s True Form While Invading Avengers HQ

The Avengers#26 by Jed MacKay, Andrea Broccardo, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit

The Impossible City first made its Marvel debut inThe Avengers#3 as a pawn in the scheme of the team’s antagonists, the Ashen Combine. Dating back to its origins, The Impossible City was alwaysframed as a Thor-level hero, but against its will, it was forced to use its space vessel for villainy. Once evil was finally vanquished,The Impossible City admitted that it wanted to use its newfound free will to become an Avenger. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were happy to oblige and make a new friend in the process.

Fast-forward to more recent times, where Doctor Doom becomes the new Sorcerer Supreme and the Avengers venture to Latveria to put an end to his tyranny. With the greatest superheroes of the Marvel Universe distracted, their most underrated enemies,The Masters of Evil, decide now is the perfect time to strike. In the last issue, the team ofMr. Hyde, Dreadknight, Madcap, The Exterminatrix Oubliette Midas, and The Mad Thinker invaded The Impossible Citywith Sam Wilson’s Captain America still onboard.

Before reassembling The Masters of Evil, The Mad Thinker previously attacked The Impossible City inThe Avengers#11 by Jed MacKay, Ivan Fiorelli, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit.

With help from The Impossible City’s autonomous A.I. physical clones, the living megastructure tends to Sam’s wounds from the previous battle, when both are suddenly attacked by the Masters of Evil. Using a virus that The Mad Thinker infected The Impossible City with way back inAvengers#11, the city’s mainframe was slowly corrupted to serve the Masters of Evil. The evildoers continue their schemes in this upcoming issue, as seen in the preview, whereThe Mad Thinker’s Quasimodo Mark X program battles for control inside The Impossible City’s mainframe.

The Avengers' Latest Story Arc Could Mark the End of Their New Headquarters

The Impossible City Has Served The Avengers for Nearly Two Years

In creating Quasimodo Mark X through his infectious Man-Slayers,The Mad Thinker isn’t just trying to take control over The Impossible City, but replacing it with its own obedient A.I. program. If Quasimodo Mark X succeeds in destroying The Impossible City’s consciousness from within its mainframe, then there is a chance that Marvel could be writing off The Impossible City in the most explosive way imaginable. The Impossible City has been working alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes ever since joining inThe Avengers#6.

Avengers#6 came out in October 2023, meaning thatfor nearly two years, The Impossible City has been saving and avenging the universe. That’s a longer tenure than most members of the team with corporeal bodies. It’s an even longer-lasting presence than manyhome base locations for The Avengers. That’s not to say The Impossible City has overstayed its welcome, but it’s worth noting that two years is typically the amount of time Marvel waits before refreshing a character or title.

If this is the case, then it feels appropriate for Marvel to showcase The Impossible City at its most valiant. Even as Quasimodo attempts to rip The Impossible City’s mind and soul apart via its mainframe, The Impossible City refuses to relent. In its own words, “I am an Avenger. And you will have nothing from me that you do not take.“The Impossible City is utterly brave and heroic in what could be its final moments, and if this is how it dies, then it dies as a prideful member ofThe Avengers.

The Avengers#26will be available from Marvel Comics starting June 29, 2025!
