AnotherBatmanmovie project is being developed for theDC Universefranchise.The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters"is underway, following the release of James Gunn’sSupermanmovie this summer, while HBO Max is getting ready to launchPeacemakerseason 2 later this month.
One of the major Justice League heroes who is getting rebooted for the DCU is Batman, withThe Brave and The Boldmoviecurrently in development for Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” However,The Brave and The Boldisn’t the only Gotham City-related project that audiences may get to experience from DC Studios.
The Hollywood Reporterreveals thatWeaponsdirector Zach Cregger has penned a script for aBatman-related film set in the DCU, titledHenchmen. TheHenchmenmovie"would center on a low-level henchman in the Gotham crime world who gains notoriety after managing to incapacitate Batman through a stroke of luck.”
While Batman could potentially appear in the movie,the report reveals that Harley Quinn and Joker are part of theHenchmenscript. DC Studios is said to be aware of his interest, as the pitch has not been formally made yet to James Gunn and Peter Safran.
What The Batman Spinoff Movie Report Means
WhileHenchmenhas yet to be pitched, the timing of the report comes on the same day as a new interview with Cregger came out fromTHR. Even though he didn’t confirm that it wasHenchmen,theWeaponsfilmmaker shared the following about what he has coming up:
And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie.
THRalso noted in theirHenchmenreport that while the DCU hasn’t cast a new actor to play Joker,Margot Robbie could theoretically reprise the role of Harley Quinn, following her time inthe DCEU movie timeline. However, time will tell how casting will work out since it needs to get greenlit by DC Studios first.
Our Take On The Batman Spinoff Movie Report
IfHenchmenends up going forward,this would be the second Batman spinoff project in the DCU timeline, as there is alsotheClayfacemoviecoming up, which is set to start production this fall. WhileHenchmenis definitely an unexpected idea for a DCU film, it could be one of the lower-scaled DC Studios films that also helps flesh out this world’s Gotham City.
But in the end,it will all depend on whether DC Studios wants to invest in an original story likeHenchmen, as it all comes down to whether there is a clear vision and script for it. Hopefully, following the initialHenchmenreport, more updates will emerge about the project in the coming months.
