Looking for something to pair with yourLEGO Botanicals? The latest LEGO Ideas set, calledThe Insect Collection, contains three life-sized models of beautiful bugs—a blue morpho butterfly, a Hercules beetle, and a Chinese mantis. It’s one of the most interesting LEGO sets to release this year, and it launches on September 7th for a reasonable $80 (Early Access for LEGO VIPs begins September 4th).
LEGO’s Insect Collection is made up of 1,111 individual pieces. The three large insects all have unique, separate platforms, which are adored by flowers, moss, mushrooms, and other foliage. These insects are also fully poseable; you can spread the Hercules beetle’s bright orange wings, place the mantis in a battle-ready position, or fold the morpho butterfly to a lifelike angle. Because each insect has its own platform, you’re free to place them together or spread them across a room, which is a bit of a rarity for LEGO sets.
Two smaller insects are also included—a honeybee and a ladybug. These insects are actually standalone LEGO bricks, and they’re about the size of your standard LEGO stud. Judging by a quickBricklinksearch, the ladybug and honeybee appear to be totally unique to this set, though LEGO has made similar bricks in the past.
Like all LEGO Ideas sets, The Insect Collection was originally dreamed up by a fan. José María Pérez Suero (@hachiroku24), who says that The Insect Collection was inspired by photography and nature, actually submitted the ideaback in 2021. It was approved by LEGO in October of 2022, which just goes to show how long this stuff can take. Though to be fair, LEGO clearly put in a lot of work here. It even hired Sanaa Kelley, a Foley artist, to createa “Green Noise” nature playlistthat customers can use while assembling The Insect Collection.
Again, LEGO’sThe Insect Collectiongoes on sale September 7th for $80. It ain’t cheap, but it’s a reasonable price for such a unique LEGO Ideas set. If you want to buy The Insect Collection three days early, register as a LEGO VIPfor free.
