Today’s Indie World Showcase highlighted a number of newly announced indie games coming to the Nintendo Switch (still no sign ofHollow Knight: Silksong, though). But perhaps the biggest surprise of all was thatFezwould not only be making its Nintendo debut nearly ten years after it first launched, but it’s available right now.
Originally an Xbox 360 title from 2012,Fezis a 2D puzzle-platformer set in a 3D world. As player character Gomez, players must rotate the level in order to progress and solve puzzles while also collecting cubes and cube fragments. While it was initially an Xbox exclusive, it would later be ported to PC, iOS devices, and the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

Upon its release, it quickly became something of an indie darling, not onlyearning praise from gamers and criticsbut receiving multiple rewards. Phil Fish, the game’s designer and founder of studio Polytron, also achieved celebrity status, having been heavily featured in theIndie Game: The Moviedocumentary, which coveredFez’s development.
A sequel was initially planned and even announced in 2013, but it was canceled when Phil Fish publicly andinfamously left the games industryentirely following a heated argument on Twitter. While the argument itself was not the reason for it, multiple factors ultimately contributed to Fish’s desire to no longer work in games. He did go on to co-found another studio called Kokoromi and worked on puzzle gameSuperHyperCube, which releasedin 2016.
Polytron still exists and is responsible for the Switch port ofFez. However, while it doesn’t seem like there’s technically anything stopping the studio from making a sequel now, it hasn’t commented on the possibility since Fish’s departure.
Fezis available on iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.
