Ever since the sitcom’s end in 2004 after running for 10 years, fans around the globe have been begging for areunion special from theFriendscast, who have been successfully off on their own projects since. But in November of last year, it was finally announced that the team of six would be reuniting for a special feature on HBO Max supported by the original creators. As David Schwimmer, who played the nerdy father-figure Ross Geller, describes it, the special will be unscripted and “basically a really fun interview and then some other surprise bits.”

Schwimmer also provides an update on the plans for the reunion special that the whole group is excited to shoot. Currently, they’re getting ready to shoot in August, but asthe Covid-19 outbreakcontinues to swell and create dangerous environments for large parties of people, fans shouldn’t be surprised to see this date pushed back even further than it already has been. “We’re gonna wait and see another week or two if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do,” he explains. While this may be disappointing news for everyone who has waited 16 years to see the cast together again, many will be happy to find that they’re being health-conscious during these times.

Schwimmer also provides some interesting backstory on his casting withFriends. “Is it true that you [previously] turned down Ross?” Fallon asks him. Schwimmer explains that he had been “miserable” on his first gig as a series regular for a short-lived show before it got canceled. “I feel like it [was] a prison sentence,” he describes. Schwimmer goes on to explain that he had initially turned down the role of Ross until the series creators told him they had Schwimmer’s voice specifically in mind for the goofy paleontologist, which he couldn’t turn down, he says.
