Aquaman#7 is a huge paradigm shift for the hero; the addition of adult Andrina to the series is just one of several major revelations in the issue, which take an emotional toll on Arthur Curry. The issue starts withAquaman still searching for Atlantis, which has disappeared into a dimension known as “the Blue.”

He soon finds it, but rediscovering his city changes everything for him. Due to “time dilation,” decades have passed in Atlantis since Aquaman last saw the people there, including his wife, Mera, and their daughter.Consequently, Andrina, last seen as a toddler, is now fully grown, while Mera is, tragically, on her deathbed.

It is a cruel twist, one that makes Andrina’s heroic introduction to the DC Universe a Pyrrhic victory for fans. She effectively replaces MerainAquamancanon, for the time being, as her mother passes away after one final conversation with Aquaman. Now, the question is what the dynamic will be between Andrina and Arthur Curry moving forward.

Introduced in 2020, Andrina Curry was originally intended to replace her father as Aquawoman, but this plan was shelved, though DC readers have gotten acquainted with an adult version of the character inseveral stories set in DC’s future. However, in the “present” of the DC timeline, she has appeared only as a child, up until now.

Aquaman#7 ages Andrina up in the most emotionally fraught way possible, making her effectively a stranger to her father, one who feels abandoned by him. In other words, they will have to get reacquainted, as adults, while also navigating their shared grief over the loss of her mother, and Arthur’s wife, Mera.

This dynamic just elevatedAquamaninto one of DC’s most must-read series right now. Where her character journey takes her in the short and long-term remains wide open to speculation, but it is safe to say she will play a pivotal role in the next era for theJustice League’sAquaman.
