TheSupermanFamily is home to some of the most powerful heroes in all of DC Comics, but one of its most iconic members has just suffered a shocking downgrade. In a surprising twist, DC has officially nerfed a fan-favorite Super-Family powerhouse, stripping away a key part of what made them so formidable.
Since when has Krypto, the Super Dog who shares most of Superman’s powers, been unable to fly to the moon?

Mark Waid, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcelo Maiolo, and Dave Sharpe’sSuperman Unlimitedseries began with a massive Kryptonite asteroidcrashing toward Earth. Superman nearly died trying to stop it, managing to prevent a catastrophic impact.
However, while he saved the world from destruction, the planet is now saturated with Kryptonite, the greatest weakness of the Super-Family, changing their lives forever. AsSuperman Unlimited#3 reveals, even Krypto is not safe from this new threat, andit looks like DC is determined to take Krypto’s struggle further by nerfing him first.

The four-page preview for the upcoming June 12, 2025 issue shows Waid revisiting the past, focusing on a young Clark and Krypto, who are both still learning to control their abilities. The scene takes on a reflective tone, as Clark sympathizes with how difficultit must be for Krypto to balance his natural dog instincts with god-like superpowers.
These four pages primarily follow Clark as he trails Krypto, cleaning up after him and making sure his canine best friend doesn’t unintentionally harm himself or anyone else. On the final page,Krypto goes from howling at the moon to trying to fly up to it.However, as he leaves Earth’s atmosphere, he becomes dizzy and loses consciousness, forcing Clark to fly up and catch him.

Although the moment is sweet, it left many readers and longtime fans scratching their heads. Since when has Krypto, the Super Dog who shares most of Superman’s powers, been unable to fly to the moon? This is a feat he has historically accomplished with ease. The implication here is that Krypto has been significantly nerfed.
Superboy Can Fly to Space, But Krypto Can’t? Fans Question Sudden Weakening of the Superdog

Superboy Clark’s narration during the scene confirms what is happening:“When you’re Krypto, you can bark at the moon… and almost fly to it.”Coupled with the image of Krypto passing out and Clark catching him, it becomes clear that what should be a routine task is now beyond the dog’s abilities. Fans are unlikely to accept the idea that this is just due to Krypto being young.
Clark himself is also shown to be young and relatively new to his powers in this scene, yet he is able to fly into space with no problem. SinceKrypto has always shared most of Superman’s abilities, including invulnerability, he should be able to survive the harsh conditions of space just as easily. Whether this version ofSuperman Unlimitedwill eventually restore Krypto’s full powers remains to be seen.
