Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 2.Dexter: Resurrectiongot off to a strong start, but one moment in the premiere contradicted a heartbreaking scene from the originalDexter. Across thefour differentDextershows, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) has had a variety of heartbreaks and tragedies. From watching both Rita and Deb get murdered to having his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott) shoot him, Dexter’s life has had a lot of pain.
Resurrectionhas reversed some of Dexter’s pain already; it didundo his death inNew Blood, after all. However, the first two episodes ofDexter: Resurrectioncompletely overlooked one of the most heartbreaking moments of the originalDexter. In fact, it directly contradicted the ending ofDexterseason 3 and cheapened one of the most important moments in Dexter’s growth as a person and a father.

Dexter Technically Cried In Season 3 Of The Original Show
Dexter “Cried” Through His Vision Of Harry When He Thought He Wouldn’t Live To See Harrison’s Birth
To be clear, Dexter hasn’t literally shed tears on screen before. When he asked Harrison to shoot him at theend ofNew Blood, or other moments like Brian Moser’s death or the aftermath of Rita’s murder, Dexter only howled and wailed, but he didn’t actually shed tears. However,inDexterseason 3, episode 12, Dexter technically did cry, though it was through his visions of Harry (James Remar).
Dexter was on the Skinner’s table after being betrayed by Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), and he was talking with his memory of Harry about Harrison. Eventually,Harry began crying and he explained that he wasn’t crying, Dexter was. As he said, “They’re not my tears, Dex. They’re yours.” Dexter then confirmed that he had never felt this way before and that he wanted to live to see Harrison’s birth.

While it’s not literally a scene of Dexter crying, it’s probably the closest the nearly emotionless serial killer will ever get.It was actually a hugely emotional scene inDexterseason 3 and the moment where Dexter finally accepted the responsibility of being a family man and a new father, butResurrectionseemingly forgot about it. Dexter technically has cried before, butResurrectiondidn’t count it.
Dexter’s Love For Harrison Has Made Him Do Things He Never Thought He Could
Having A Son Has Made Dexter Grow & Develop So Much Emotionally Over The Years
Even thoughDexter: Resurrectionforgot that Dexter has technically cried before, it didn’t forget what has been the single best influence on Dexter since the start.Harrison has been such a strong force for Dexter’s emotional development and growth since before he was even born. Dexter’s “crying” scene inDexterseason 3 proves that, but Harrison has done so much more.
Harrison and Dexter’s love for his son have gotten him to do things he would never have done in the first place.

Over the years,Harrison and Dexter’s love for his son have gotten him to do things he would never have done in the first place. From crying to risking his own cover to save an innocent, Dexter would do almost anything for Harrison. Harrison was even the reason Dexter went to Iron Lake inNew Blood, as he wanted to protect his son from himself.

Family has always played a huge role inDexter, but Harrison is the single best example of what the concept means to the franchise. The only way Dexter was able to be “reborn” inResurrectionis because he needs to protect Harrison and help him become an adult. Family quite literally saved Dexter and let him be a somewhat normal person, andDexter: Resurrectionclearly understands that.
