Dexter: Resurrectionstar Michael C. Hall explains why his serial killer character has remained popular. Debuting inDexterin 2006, Hall plays the titular serial killer with a moral code. The series ran for an impressive eight seasons on Showtime. However,Dexter’s original finale is infamous for its poor reception. The character would return years later forDexter: New Bloodin 2022 and make an appearance in the pilot ofDexter: Original Sin,along with narrating the show in 2024. Now, Hall is set to return in theupcomingDexter: Resurrection.

In an interview onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Hall discusses why viewers connect with his character. You know, different people like it for different reasons. Obviously, they like to see him do in the bad guys. But, I don’t know, I think he’s remarkably capable on the one hand, and remarkably limited in other ways, in terms of his ability to function as a “human being,” and people can relate to that. And he’s really good at getting out of jams. People like to watch him get out of jams [laughs].

What This Means For Dexter: Resurrection

Dexter Has Grown Since His Inception

Part of Dexter’s appeal is watching the growth of the character since his inception. When first introduced,Dexter is emotionally cold and has trouble connecting with other people. His relationships with others begin almost exclusively as a means to be seen as normal by the surrounding community. While Dexter still struggles in social situations, the people around him are drawn to him, and he has developed into a more fully fleshed-out character.

Hall is right that part of the fun of the character is seeing his expertise and passion. Having Dexter use his skills to deduce how a killing occurred and hunting down the murderer makes his story compelling.Dexter can never seem to shed himself of his Dark Passenger, so the new series will have to rely on the traits that madeDextersuch a hit in the first place. With Hall having portrayed the character for nearly 20 years, he has a clear understanding of what makes the character connect with audiences.

Our Take On Dexter’s Popularity

The Character Is Iconic

There is a reason why Dexter Morgan has been the main character of four separate shows, and part of that is how the character is perceived. Dexter is an iconic character, and there is still clearly an appetite to see what he continues to get himself into, and more importantly, how to get out of it. WithDexter: Resurrectionpotentially lasting for multiple seasons, there will be plenty of opportunities for viewers to connect with him as he tries to find his son, Harrison, in New York City.
