Dragon Ball Superis finally ready to move onto its next arc, which all known evidence suggests will be the Black Frieza arc. But as Goku tangles with the franchise’s worst villain one more time, it’s not Goku who deserves to emerge victorious–it’s Vegeta.

Goku, of course, has plenty of reasons to want Frieza dead. And, in many ways,Black Frieza is the result of Goku’s own decisionto revive him after the Tournament of Power, meaning it’s time the chickens came home to roost. However, Goku’s relationship with Frieza isn’t actually all that dynamic; Frieza wants revenge for his defeat at Goku’s hands, but Goku doesn’t really have a driving reason to go after Frieza, other than the fact that he’s a major threat. Vegeta, on the other hand, has a far more personal beef with Frieza, and his defeat at Vegeta’s hands would be oh-so-satisfying.

Vegeta’s new form revealed in the manga, Ultra Ego.

Vegeta Deserves a Win Over Frieza, For All Saiyans

Vegeta’s Grudge With the Space Tyrant Must Be Settled

Vegeta’s history with Frieza goes back to before Goku’s birth. From a young age, Vegeta was taken from his father and deployed on missions for Frieza, in part as a means of controlling King Vegeta. Through luck, Vegeta decided to ignore the order to return to the Saiyan homeworld, and thus survived the genocide of his people, but there was hardly a doubt in his mind as to who was responsible. When Vegeta was killed by Frieza on Namek, he pleaded with Goku to avenge the Saiyan people by killing Frieza, and it was tragic that he wasn’t able to do so himself.

Things have changed a lot since Frieza was defeated on Namek, however. Vegeta is back and more powerful than ever, and he has a true understanding of the horror that he has caused throughout the galaxy, largely at Frieza’s behest. Vegeta may have been a monster, but he was a monster shaped by Frieza. If he wants to redeem himself and avenge his people, then killing Frieza is the best way he has of accomplishing that. This is a chance for Vegeta to do what he should’ve done years ago, and there’s no doubt it will be an emotionally satisfying moment for Vegeta to emerge victorious.

Black Frieza’s Defeat Could Be the Culmination of Vegeta’s Story

Vegeta’s Character Journey Has Brought Him to This Point

ThroughoutDragon Ball Super,Vegeta has had an awakening as to his responsibility for the evil deedsin his past, and has worked to atone for them. He’s no longer the vicious, ruthless warrior he once was, something that’s even caused some problems with his training with Beerus. Vegeta needs to prove that he’s better than Frieza now, as Frieza reminds him too much of who he was. Finally defeating Frieza himself would be symbolically rejecting the aspects of his own personality that were shaped by Frieza, and fully embracing his role as a hero. For Vegeta’sDragon Ball Supercharacter arc to be complete, he must be the one to strike down Frieza.
