There’s a battle in Act 2 ofBaldur’s Gate 3that retains the title of the most nerve-wracking fight in the game, even after two years of several content updates that significantly changed the title. The critically acclaimed turn-based RPG, which received several awards, including Game of the Year at TGA 2023, has received many patches that fixed problems and added new content over the past couple of years. Recently, Larian Studios issued the final patch for the game, which brought forth12 new subclasses toBaldur’s Gate 3, for example.
With this type of content and the base game’s branching story paths, it’s possible to tackle the adventure in many ways, significantly increasing its replayability factor. Even with so many fans and different approaches to gameplay, players are still uncovering secrets about the title. One such example is seen in asecret prequel toBaldur’s Gate 3, which revolves around Tav, your main playable character. While a lot is still being uncovered, there is also a lot that hasn’t changed, and one of those things is how tough an Act 2 battle can be.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Battle To Defend The Portal For Halsin Is Still The Most Thrilling
You Have To Protect The Portal For Five Tense Rounds
The most thrilling fight inBG3is the battle to defend the portal for Halsin as he tries to rescue Thaniel – a key figure in lifting the curse from the Shadow-Cursed Lands. This is not necessarily a tough battle, but it is the most nerve-wracking, as the stakes are high and it’s made clear from the very start. Before the battle, you are informed about what you must do and for how long you should do it, which only adds to the pressure.
Completing this fight is essential tolifting the Shadow Curse inBaldur’s Gate 3, too. If you’re on a heroic campaign to help all, you can’t lose it. During the fight, you’ll have to endure five rounds of combat and, instead of focusing solely on keeping your characters alive, you’ll also have to defend the portal Halsin goes through. These five rounds seem endless, especially when the end is truly in sight, as enemies continuously spawn, trying to either traverse the portal or destroy it.

Act 3 Battles In BG3 Are Tougher, But They Can’t Replicate The Pressure From Act 2
Endgame Bosses Have More HP & Deal More Damage
Technically speaking, the battles in Act 3, such as the fight against Raphael in theHouse of Hope inBaldur’s Gate 3, are much more difficult. The bosses and their enemies are tougher, deal more damage, and the odds of you losing are higher. However, these fights, which are basically conclusive battles to the story arcs you’ve engaged with during the campaign, can’t replicate the tension and the pressure that can be seen in Act 2 battles, especially the one where you have to defend Halsin’s portal. It can be daunting to see multiple enemies approaching the portal at once.
Because of the game’s turn-based combat system, it’s common for you to see four or more enemies move toward the portal at once, unable to truly retaliate without the help of an Opportunity Attack.
With the proper planning and usage of skills and items, you can easily fend off the foes for five rounds, but the tension is persistent and, with some of the enemies moving across the battlefield with teleportation-like skills, you may see yourself having to improvise and change strategies on the go, which makes things even more nerve-wracking. As tense as it is, however, this is one of my favorite fights inBaldur’s Gate 3, even after two years and multiple campaigns.
