In what may be a surprise to many, a fan-favorite character fromThe Witcherseries may not be returning for the highly anticipated new entry,The Witcher 4. The game was announced at The Game Awards back in December, although itsrelease is still a long way off. The title is set to start a new saga inThe Witcherseries, with Ciri, a major character from the original trilogy, replacing Geralt of Rivia in the starring role. However, it seems like some other long-time characters may not appear inThe Witcher 4.
In a new interview posted onEurogamer’s Instagram, the voice actress for Yennefer, Denise Gough, stated:“I don’t know any of this,“when asked about how the production ofThe Witcher 4was coming along. However, Gough also stated that she didn’t know what to expect when she was recording forThe Witcher 3, as that game was her first video game role (viaEurogamer). Yennefer has been a major part ofThe Witcherseries for quite a while now, so if this is true, her absence might be a surprise for fans.
Yennefer May Not Return For Witcher 4
But Other Major Characters Will
The Witcher 4might be replacing Geralt in the starring role, but developer CD Projekt RED and Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, have confirmedGeralt will be returning in some capacity forThe Witcher 4. When it comes to other characters returning,it now seems questionable. Yennefer and Geralt are essentially the adoptive parents of Ciri, so it would be natural for fans to assume that both of them will appear in the next game.
It’s worth noting thatvoice acting is usually completed near the end of the main development of video games, andThe Witcher 4is not releasing until 2027 at the earliest, so Gough may not have any knowledge of the game yet. It’s still possible she may be in the game or that she’s playing coy in accordance with CDPR’s wishes.
Our Take: Yennefer Being Absent Would Be Strange
She Has A Major Role In The Witcher Lore
After theBlood & Wineexpansion forThe Witcher 3provided a satisfying ending for Geralt’s story, it may have seemed like he would not be present inThe Witcher 4as well, but since he is confirmed to be in the game,it seems unlikely that Yennefer won’t make an appearance. There’s a lot of support for the idea thatYennefer is who Geralt should end up with, especially post-Blood & Wine. Given Yennefer’s relationship with Ciri and her love for Geralt, her absence would be strange if she doesn’t appear in the game.
The Witcher 4is still quite a way away, soit’s entirely possible that Gough will be contacted to appear as Yennefer at a later date. She could also be keeping her appearance a secret for now. WithThe Witcher 4moving the story away from Geralt and putting the limelight on Ciri, there’s a chance that there might not be enough room for Yennefer, but again, it seems unlikely that a fan-favorite character like Yennefer, who has deep connections with Ciri, would be completely absent. Unfortunately, we still have quite a long time to wait to see if Yennefer will be a part of this next installment.
