Warner Bros.and New Line Cinema have released the first trailer for Olivia Wilde’s new filmDon’t Worry Darling.The film stars Florence Pugh as a 1950s housewife living with her husband (Harry Styles) in a utopian experimental community who begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.

The trailer fromWarner Bros.forDon’t Worry Darlingopens with stars Pugh and Styles as they party with their friends in their idyllic and luxurious suburban lifestyle. She tells him, “you and me,” to which he replies, “Always.” The husbands head off to work as their dutiful housewives wave goodbye, and we hear the voice of cult-like CEO Frank (played by Chris Pine) as he narrates about all the things they expect from their wives: A clean home, food on the table, and above all else, discretion. Things take a turn in theDon’t Worry Darlingtrailer as an earthquake rattles the wives, who wonder what it is their husbands do all day.

They work at something called The Victory Project, which CEO Frank is convinced will change the world. However, things may not be as idyllic as they seem, as Pugh’s housewife begins to question her husband’s work. She looks up in the sky and see’s the blurred image of a plane overhead, and she crushes an egg in her kitchen only to reveal that there’s nothing inside. Styles and Pugh get steamy together as they make out while Pine’s CEO awkwardly watches. TheDon’t Worry Darlingtrailer escalates more and more with bizarre images of dance classes and men in jumpsuits, finally culminating with Pugh lamenting that she’s not crazy and admitting that she doesn’t want to be there while she peers into a mysterious dome-like structure.

Don’t Worry Darlingis Wilde’s second directorial outing. Her first was the acclaimed coming of age filmBooksmart,which stared Beanie Feldstein andKaitlyn Dever as two high school studentswho set out to finally break the rules and party before they graduate. The script forDon’t Worry Darlingis written byBooksmartscreenwriter Kate Silberman, based on a story by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke, who also serve as executive producers on the film.

Don’t Worry Darlingpremiered its first footage last month at CinemaCon, during whichWilde was served custody paperson stage in what has now become a highly publicized event. The new film certainly looks like a tonal change from Wilde’s first film, shifting from a coming-of-age comedy to a psychological thriller.Don’t Worry Darlingbears some similarities toTheStepford Wives, the satirical psychological horror novel that was adapted into a movie in 1975 and again in 2004 with Nicole Kidman.The Stepford Wivesfeatures similar themes surrounding suburban life, conspiracies, as well as traditional and restrictive gender roles for women.

Don’t Worry Darlingwill premiere in theatres on September 23rd, 2022.
