Gods Of Egypt Has Secured A Place On A Major Streaming Chart

Gerard Butler’s 2016 fantasy-action movieGods of Egyptis now doing well on a major Netflix chart. The movie, which takes place in the world of Egyptian mythology, follows the mortal Bek (Brenton Thwaites) finding himself in the middle of a battle between the gods.

The movie, which was directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow), also starred Gerard Butler as Set, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, Geoffrey Rush as Ra, Bryan Brown as Osiris, Rufus Sewell as Urshu, and Chadwick Boseman as Thoth. Ahead of its release, the movie was heavily criticized for whitewashing the majority of its Egyptian characters.

In addition to theGods of Egyptcasting controversy, the movie was a failure critically and commercially. In addition to earning a dismal 15% score with an audience score of 37% on the platform’s Popcornmeter, it was a box office bomb, grossing just $150.6 million against its sizable reported budget of $140 million.

After arriving on the streaming platform on August 7,Gods of Egypthas been trending on the dailyNetflixchart of their Top 10 most-watched movies in the United States. It first appeared at No. 9 on August 9, rising to No. 4 the following day before spending two consecutive days and eventually settling at No. 6 as of August 14.

At the time of writing, the only movies aboveGods of Egypton the U.S. chart are considerably newer titles, including the Netflix originalsFixed(No. 5),Happy Gilmore 2(No. 3), andKPop Demon Hunters(No. 1), the 2022 rom-comMarry Me, and the 2023 action-thrillerKandahar, which also stars Gerard Butler.

What This Means For Gods of Egypt

The fact that bothGods of EgyptandKandaharare surging on the Netflix chart in the U.S. islikely a result of thelive-actionHow to Train Your Dragonremakebecoming a major hit this summer. It isthe fifth highest-grossing movie of the year so far with a worldwide haul of $623.7 million.

In that movie,Gerard Butlerreprised his role as the Viking chieftain Stoick the Vast, which seems to have reignited interest in his previous action and fantasy titles, even the ones that were initially disregarded at the time when they were originally released. Whether this results in an improvement ofGods of Egypt’s Popcornmeter score remains to be seen.
