A head-scratching bit of lore lingering fromGhostsseason 4 gets an update from co-showrunner Joe Port. The supernatural comedy has been renewed for two additional installments at CBS, meaning thatGhostsseason 5will get the chance to pick up on the fact that death is now hunting Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), but there are even more unanswered questions.

One of those questions connects to Sass (Román Zaragoza). His girlfriend, Joan (played by Taylor Ortega), can roam more freely despite the fact that the show’s lore dictates that spirits are generally confined to the places where they died.

In an update fromTVLine, showrunner and executive producer Joe Port connected Joan’s powers to Pete’s (played by Richie Moriarty). Port, who serves as showrunner with fellow co-creator Joe Wiseman, teased that there will be more to learn about Joan’s powers. Read his quote below:

“There may be a story behind that. I mean, you know Pete’s story — it’s because he was a travel agent and never went anywhere — so I guess we’ll learn more about Joan’s, yes.”

What This Means For Ghosts Season 5

We’ll See Joan Again

Joan, a screenwriter, appears in three episodes ofGhosts. She’s a screenwriter who faced difficulties because of the era which she came in. She hits it off with Sass, becoming his second major interest. And, as Port says, she has a shared ability with Pete. Arguably having the bestpower of all the Woodstone spirits, Pete can roam freely within limits.

Trevor

Asher Grodman

It could be that Joan enjoys the same kind of caveats, having built up her powers over her many decades of being a spirit. A version of this has happened onGhostsbefore, with characters likeTrevor (Asher Grodman) having a better handle on how to interact with the physical worldafter some practice and dedication. But, either way, the update means more of Joan.

Our Take On Joan’s Ghosts Season 5 Return

It Points To Something Larger

The ending ofGhostsseason 4, which makes Jay a marked man, will have to be addressed. But there are also arcs about the show’s larger group that will have to be touched on, including whether Sass and Joan are built to last. It’ll come later this year, thoughGhostsseason 5 doesn’t have an exact premiere date.

Underneath it all, however, is the show’s central quandary. With enough contentment, with enough peace, these spirits will eventually have to start to want to move on. This has been the area thatGhostshas teased from time to time, but never fully committed to it. It’ll be interesting to see where the next two seasons go with it.
