With the release ofStar Wars Battlefront 2andStar Wars: The Last Jedi, 2017 was a big year for theStar Warsfranchise. However, neither release really rallied the fanbase the way its creators may have wanted, withStar Wars Battlefront 2receiving a particularly thorough roasting in itsHonest Game trailer.Hopefully, 2018 will be a better year for the franchise, especially since it begins with a 16-bit rendition of Luke Skywalker’s final moments in the film.
On the first of this year, Mr. Sunday Movies posted this 16-bit video made by animator John Stratman. Seemingly true to theStar Warsfilm, the video begins with Luke leaving the rebel base on Crait and ends with Luke’s death on Ahch-To. It even includes iconic lines from the film such as “Strike me down in anger, and I’ll always be with you. Just like your father.” Moreover, the music in the background seems to be straight from a 16-bit video game, perfectly blending 16-bit nostalgia and modernStar Wars.
Even those unhappy with the movie may give this animation credit because it is a beautiful and accurate rendition of the movie. In the video, Luke leaves no footprints during his fight with Kylo Ren, which is perfectly captured in this 16-bit style. Moreover, the iconic twin suns appear at Luke’s death, which may be the most beautiful moment of the entire video. Check it out here:
While this video focuses on Luke and Kylo Ren during the Battle of Crait, the recentLast Jedi DLC forStar Wars Battlefront 2focuses on Finn(and Phasma, although she is not involved in this battle). The DLC is available for free now for those who wish to play this battle. Whether it’s viewing the film, watching the 16-bit video, or playingStar Wars Battlefront 2, this particular scene may be iconic for old and newStar Warsfans but maybe not everyone.
