The wait continues for aHollow Knight: Silksongrelease date, even after its briefappearance at the Xbox Games Showcase, but development house Team Cherry is already sending some complicated signals about the metroidvania’s post-launch DLC support. News about the highly anticipatedSilksonghas been infrequent for years since its announcement in 2019, with fans hanging on every word that comes from the studio’s reps.

Team Cherry’s marketing lead, Matthew “Leth” Griffin, commented in a YouTube stream chathinting at the existence ofHollow Knight: SilksongDLC, according toGamesRadar. With the comment being taken as confirmation of DLC already being planned for the unreleased game,Hollow Knightfans took the news as both exciting and ominous –Sliksongitself was originally planned to be DLC forHollow Knight, before it was spun off into a sequel and began it’s protracted development.

Griffin then took a step back to explain his comment in theHollow KnightDiscord server. “I was joking that silkposting would continue post launch – the video had a question about if silkposting would end when the game comes out,” he said, referring to the numerous memes made by the game’s fanbase to cope with the long wait. He continued,“I think DLC is likely, but that decision isn’t up to me. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Team Cherry Suggests Silksong DLC Is A Possibility

Team Cherry’s discussion of DLC is complicated, not to mention odd. Griffin clearly doesn’t want to confirm the existence of DLC, and wasn’t trying to, but anything other than the usualsilence from Team Cherryis going to be taken out of context and scrutinized by a fanbase that has long since grown impatient. For those that are banking onSilksongfor the long haul, though,Griffin saying, “I think DLC is likely,” is a pretty promising statement from someone so close to the development team.

IfSilksongdoes end up releasing DLC post-launch, it would follow in the footsteps of its predecessor.Hollow Knightreceived four DLC packsafter its release in 2017:Hidden Dreams,The Grimm Troupe,Lifeblood, andGodmaster. All four were released for free, but there’s no telling ifSilksongwill copy that bit of theHollow Knightformula.

Silksong DLC Would Probably Be Worthwhile

But Don’t Count Your Eggs Before They Hatch

There’s understandable excitement about even the possibility of DLC on the horizon forSilksong. There’s a lot of faith in Team Cherry despite the limited information onSilksongitself, so the idea of the game being supported post-launch is an enticing prospect. Even though the game isn’t out yet, and it’s generally a good idea to wait for reviews before getting too invested in any game, allSilksonghas to do is build incrementally on what is generally considered a top-tier metroidvania.

It helps thatSilksongwas originally conceived as DLC forHollow Knight; it will, very generally speaking, likely be more of the same, and that’s really all it needs to be incredible. The long wait also factors into the DLC excitement.Hollow Knight: Silksongfans have been eagerly waiting since 2019, so the potential for DLC to come in hopefully quick succession is something to look forward to, even after the game finally releases.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the long-anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight, the 2017 indie action-adventure Metroidvania hit. In Silksong, players will take on the role of Princess Hornet, a far more agile and combat-ready hero than the Knight in the previous title, with a stronger emphasis on aerial combos and gameplay. Stuck in a new strange land, Hornet will battle her way through all-new environments outside of Hollownest to find her way back while saving this new kingdom.
