Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Matlock season 1, episodes 18 & 19!Matlockshowrunner Jenie Snyder Urman has explained season 1’s ending mystery character and how their arrival will impact the story of season 2. TheMatlockseason 1 finaleoffered answered many important questions from across the series, including revealing it had been Julian (Jason Ritter) who hid the Wellbrexa files. However, the final moments of the episode delivered just as powerful a shock, with Matty (Kathy Bates) answering the door for someone who could possibly be Alfie’s (Aaron D. Harris) father.
Speaking withDeadline, Urman explained the thought process behind Alfie’s possible father showing up in the final moments ofMatlockseason 1. The showrunner addressed howthe reveal will lead into season 2, specifically playing into the idea of Matty starting to lose control over everything she does. She also expressed interest in seeing how Bates portrays the confident character being under stress now that she doesn’t have full command over major facets of her life. Check out what Urman had to say below:

Yes, this man has shown up, and he says he’s Alfie’s father, and it will throw everything into chaos. The entire show has been built around Matty’s sense of control. We flash back to see how she masterminded things, and suddenly, Olympia has this piece of information that Matty does not know. There’s also this new element throwing her home life, which is her center, her grounding center, into absolute chaos. So I think you’re going to see what happens to this character when suddenly she’s under all different kinds of pressures and isn’t the one in control. I am really excited to see what Kathy Bates does with that.
What Alfie’s Father Could Mean For Matlock Season 2
The Kingston Family Is About To Be Shaken Up
Thecharacters inMatlockhave many complex connections to one another, but for Matty, her grandson Alfie is one of the most important people in her life. A genius with the know-how to be in charge of the family’s operations, he’s played a crucial role in the show since the start, despite only appearing in a recurring capacity throughout season 1. However, his possible father showing up threatens the balance of the family, as it means the young boy might develop a connection to someone he hasn’t even met yet.
As for how this will impactMatlockseason 2,Urman’s words about Matty ring true, in that she’s always trying to maintain control, even if she can’t fully do so. This was part of why she never confided in genuine friends like Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) about her Wellbrexa investigation, being cautious in order to keep a grip on her case. But, with Alfie’s father possibly coming into their lives, it seems like the show is offering a challenge the protagonist can’t face by trying to wrestle control of it.

Our Take On How Alfie’s Father Will Impact Matlock’s Story
Season 2 Promises A Deeper Exploration Of The Reveal
Before his arrival, Matty and her husband, Edwin (Sam Anderson), agreed they would try searching for him, despite worries about who he would really be. Now that he’s arrived, however, it sounds likeMatlockseason 2 will feature plenty of shaken-up dynamics as he grows into an important part of the story. While this will be no doubt balanced by the main character’s continued legal work, it does indicate a much deeper focus on the Kingston family moving forward.
