Tom Cruiseheaps praise on Keanu Reeves, revealing that he calls theJohn Wickstar to congratulate him when he makes a big movie. Cruise began his journey as Ethan Hunt way back in 1996, and by all accounts is ready to call it a day with this summer’sMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Cruise’s fellow action movie headliner Reeves, meanwhile, is taking a break from his own hit franchiseJohn Wick, whose last installment seemed to finally kill the series' previously invincible assassin.
Cruise and Reeves are indeed connected by more than just their action hero status, as the former detailed at a recent red carpet appearance ahead of the New York premiere ofMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, taking a moment to praise Reeves, while revealing that he always calls theJohn Wickstar to congratulate him on his successes(viaExtra):

I grew up with Keanu. You see Speed, you see The Matrix, and also what they did with the [John] Wick franchise, and looking at that you’re saying, look at how they captured the tone from that and that ability and charisma. …I know what it takes to do that stuff so I always call him. I’m like “Hats off man, hats off,” and I dig those movies, I really love it.
What This Means For Cruise And Reeves
They Appear To Have A Little Action Star Bromance
Cruise’sMission: Impossiblefranchisehas increasingly been dominated by the star’s stunt work, a crazy new example of which can be witnessed inThe Final Reckoning(it’s clear what to expect when a biplane pops up in aMission: Impossiblemovie). Picking up on Cruise’s example, Reeves has done his own difficult and sometimes dangerous stunts in theJohn Wickfilms, firmly establishing himself as the assassin movie answer to Cruise’s iconic spy movie character Ethan Hunt.
Michael Nyqvist is the only actor to play a villain in both theMission: ImpossibleandJohn Wickseries
There are currently no known plans for Cruise and Reeves to team up on-screen, but Cruise may be set to star alongside one of Reeves’John Wickfranchise cohorts, as reports are swirling that Ana de Armas will join Cruise in his upcoming undersea thriller movieDeeper. Cruise may be impressed by Reeves’ work as Wick, but it seems he is equally taken with de Armas, whose spinoff movieBallerinareleases on June 6.
Cruise unsurprisingly has already seenBallerina, and has nothing but nice things to say about the spinoff movieand its female star, with whom he may soon be sharing the screen (reports say they’ve already begun doing diving practice). Cruise said at the NYCMission: Impossible 8premiere, “I saw the movie [Ballerina], it just kicks a** … it’s right in that tone, it’s right in that Wick world, you’re gonna love it.”

Cruise’s love for theJohn Wickmovies may have tangibly shown up inMission: Impossible – Fallout, whose famed bathroom fight feels like it was taken from one of Reeves’ films. Aesthetically,Mission: Impossibleseems to have borrowed more fromWickthan vice versa. This should come as no surprise, as Reeves’ assassin movie series is arguably the most influential current action franchise.
There’s no doubtWickdirector Chad Stahelski is one of moviedom’s most respected stunt mavens (he was a stunt coordinator before moving on to directing). The stunt-crazy Cruise loving Stahelski’s work with Reeves and de Armasis just game recognizing game.
