I Know What You Did Last Summerdirector Jennifer Kaytin Robinson teases the Fisherman’s updated arsenal of weapons in the upcoming reboot. Almost 30 years after the original horror movie, the upcoming legacy sequel is set to feature the return of both Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson, this time as allies to a new group of friends who become the targets of the Fisherman after a gruesome incident in their past. As seen in the newI Know What You Did Last Summertrailer, the iconic slasher villain hasn’t lost his edge.
In a recent interview withBloody Disgusting, Robinson reveals that the Fisherman will be hunting his victims in the newI Know What You Did Last Summerwith some new gear at hand. According to the director, the killer has access to an array of various nautical-themed weapons, and that means no character will be safe. Check out her comments below:

“The Fisherman is coming for everyone. Each of our characters end up face to face with the slicker. And only some of them make it out alive. Surviving is definitely not in the cards for all of our players. […]
The Slicker, hook, and body count are all getting an upgrade. The hook is the weapon of choice, but this time The Fisherman has a lot more in the arsenal. We looked at all different nautical-themed weaponry for The Fisherman to collect victims with.”

Robinson’s teases about the Fisherman accompany a new image of the killer, which shows his full look for the reboot as he attacks a cowering victim:
What This Means For The I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot
Will It Be An Improvement Over The Previous Film?
In addition to Hewitt and Prinze Jr., the newI Know What You Did Last Summercastfeatures Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Lola Tung, Austin Nichols, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, among others. The latest comments from Robinson make clear thatnot all the characters these new cast members are playing will survive, and that tracks with the franchise’s previous installments. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers, for example, is one of many victims in the original movie.
As seen in the first trailer for the movie, the hook isn’t the only weapon being used this time. The trailer opens with a terrifying sequence of the Fisherman attacking Cline’s character’s boyfriend with a harpoon gun. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t unveil any of the other nautical weapons the killer will be using. It remains unclear whether these upgrades will result in a better movie, butI’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer(2006) left a low bar to clear after earning a 0% score onRotten Tomatoes.
There are three previous movies in theI Know What You Did Last Summerfranchise, in addition to a 2021 TV show that was cancelled after one season.
Our Take On The Upgraded Fisherman In I Know What You Did Last Summer
Will The Legacy Sequel Repeat Scream’s Success?
One of the most successful horror legacy sequels in recent memory is 2022’sScream, which successfully reinvigorated the franchise 11 years after the mixed reception toScream 4(2011). The film did this without making any drastic changes to Ghostface, but the next film,Scream 6(2023), did feature the killer using a shotgun for the first time. The 2023 film was a hit, which suggests making changes to decades-old character traditions can be done successfully.
While it will be interesting to see the Fisherman using some new weapons in theI Know What You Did Last Summerreboot, the hook still being his primary killing instrument feels like a good call, as it is such an important part of that character’s silhouette. It remains to be seen how the changes go over with audiences, but viewers can evidently can expect an even more deadly antagonist when the hit horror franchise returns this summer.
