American Idolseason 23 judge Carrie Underwood had a rocky start in her new role, butI always had faith that she’d improve, and that’s exactly what she did in time for the live shows. ForAmerican Idolseason 23, Carrie Underwood joined Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at the judges' table. She seemed like the perfect choice to replace Katy Perry because she wonAmerican Idolseason 4 in 2005, and she’s since gone on to become a global superstar. During theAmerican Idolseason 23 auditions, I thought that Carrie gave some great advice to the contestants.
However, Carrie soon fell into the same trap that Lionel and Luke have been in for years, as she stopped giving any negative feedback to theAmerican Idolseason 23contestants. Instead, Carrie became their biggest cheerleader, even when they clearly needed guidance about how to improve. I felt that the judges did a great disservice to the Top 24 contestants during the Hawaii round because they didn’t offer them any critiques at all. However, I always knew that Carrie was capable of more as a judge, and I was right because, during the first live show when the Top 14 was decided,she gave the contestants some much-needed advice.

During the firstAmerican Idolseason 23 live episode, some of the contestants faced a difficult challenge. While ten of them advanced directly to the Top 14 after America’s vote, ten others were in jeopardy of going home and had to sing for a chance that the judges would save them. The ten safe contestants sang celebration songs and didn’t receive any feedback from the judges, whilethe ten who were in the danger zone sang for their lives and were critiqued by the judges.
I was happy and relieved to see thatCarrie did offer some guidance to help the contestants improve in case they advanced to the next round. I was glad that, after Baylee Littrell’s performance of “All of Me” by John Legend, she gave him specific feedback about what she liked, including his confidence and song choice. She told him that it was the first time that she saw him as a frontman and that it was his best performance. Carrie added that he deserved to be on the stage. This was so much more useful for Baylee than simply hearing that he was"amazing,“a word that Carrie had overused in previous episodes.

Carrie is the onlyAmerican Idoljudge who’s been a contestant on the show, and she competed when Simon Cowell, who was notorious for his harsh critiques, was a judge. She knows what it’s like to be critiqued after a performance, and I think that it’s clear that she’s a gentle critic because she doesn’t want to hurt the contestants' feelings. She’s even said that she’s worried about coming across as mean, but I believe that there’s a difference between being mean and giving constructive criticism.
Meanness is always wrong, but giving the contestants something to improve upon, even if they’re at the top of their game, can only help them in the long-run. Some of theAmerican Idolcontestants have never performed on a stage this large before, and, therefore, they could use guidance from someone like Carrie, who had the same experience. I know thatCarrie is a very kind person, andshe can use that aspect of her personality to help shape the contestants into superstars.
Carrie is gaining more confidence as anAmerican Idoljudge, which will help her to continue to improve. I think that, as the season progresses, she’ll become much more comfortable giving the contestants tips about how to make their performances even better.Carrie has so much to offer the contestants, and I hope that she’ll use her experience as anAmerican Idolalum to give them strong advice that will help them advance in the competition.
I was so happy to see that I was right, andCarrie improved as anAmerican Idoljudgein time for the live shows. Everything that viewers saw up until the Top 14 episode was filmed beforehand, so the producers could’ve edited it however they wanted. However, the live shows proved that Carrie is coming into her own as a judge, and that they made the right choice when they selected her.I hope that Carrie continues to improve, and that she’ll be anAmerican Idoljudge for as long as the show’s on the air.
