American Idol’s latest addition, Carrie Underwood, has received backlash for her empathetic judging style, butshe doesn’t seem to be improving.The country superstar was added to the judging panel in the Spring of 2025 as a replacement for the long-running panelist, Katy Perry. Katy’s reality TV stint spanned an impressive 6 seasons before she stepped down. While audiences were excited about Carrie’s introduction onAmerican Idolseason 23, she hasn’t lived up to expectations. The star has been heavily scrutinized for her kindhearted nature, but Katy’s was met with similar criticism.
Katy’s was believed to be overly harsh, but Carrie’s style seems like an overcompensation. Carrie’s diplomatic nature has translated intolenient judgment and, some may argue, unjust praise. As audiences second-guess the show’s decision to bring on Carrie, it’s become increasingly clear that her commentary will have to be more constructive. If she doesn’t make any changes, there’s a decent chance that public backlash will lead to a break in her multi-year contract. However, Carrie has the potential to improve.

The other panelists, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, have maintained reputations as more diplomatic judges, sothe panel is still missing another headstrong and opinionated star.Carrie doesn’t need to be brutally honest, like alumnus Simon Cowell, but she will need to take harder stances when it comes to criticism.

Additionally, when all performances are praised,stand-out performances aren’t given proper credit. Contestants need to know what makes their performance outstanding or less memorable. Someone needs to draw that line.
Her intentions are clearly pure. Carrie wants every singerto feel represented, welcomed, and comfortable.Her understanding and wholesome nature were represented when one singer, Breanna Nix, entered with her husband and son. Carrie rushed to hold the toddler so that Breanna could focus on the performance. When Breanna implied that her role as a stay-at-home mother was inconsequential, Carrie reminded her:
“Never say ‘I’m just a stay-at-home mom.’ You have the most important job.”

Carrie has been accommodating and encouraging. However, there is a fine line between hearing everyone’s perspective and enabling. Every artist is still learning, andCarrie is present as a mentor. They are prepared to receive criticism. Carrie needs to dish it out.
Carrie, while challenged with judging highly talented individuals, stillhasn’t contributed as much as her counterparts. In the last couple of episodes, Carrie praised nearly every act. While Luke and Lionel did as well, they offered constructive criticism.
WhenAmerican Idol’s Mattie Pruitt performed “Wide Awake,” Luke complimented the performance while gently commenting on the lack of stage presence. Conversely, Carrie reminded Mattie,“You’re so good.”She seemed less willing to offer criticism or comment on her vocal qualities. ThisAmerican Idolmay still need to find her footing this season, but she has potential. Carrie has every trait necessary to be the perfect judge. She may need some time.
