Bruce Almighty, the 2003 comedic vehicle for Jim Carrey, almost gained another sequel afterEvan Almighty. TitledBrucifer, the film would have seen Carrey’s character, Bruce, gain the powers of the Devil.

InUniversal’sBruce Almighty, Bruce meets God (Morgan Freeman) while Bruce is down on his luck. He feels stuck in life and has little control over the direction of his life. God, needing a vacation, gives Bruce his omnipotent (though not omniscient) abilities. Though Bruce thinkslife is a breeze in God mode, he quickly realizes that his normal life is better than playing God and trying to fix the world’s problems, especially after he realizes he has to answer the miracles of anyone who prays to God (which is a lot of people, as it turns out).

During an interview withSyFy, the movie’s screenwriters, Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe, recalled how they ran into producer Michael Bostick whenBruce Almightyinitially opened nationwide. They pitched him the plot of the infernal sequel, and there was genuine enthusiasm for the project. Carrey himself appeared to be eager to doBrucifer. As for why Bruce would have turned to demonic abilities after becoming content with his life in the first film, the screenwriters stated that they would have based the story on the Biblical Trials of Job.

To do so, theBruce Almightysequel would have killed off his wife, Grace (played by Jennifer Aniston). “You tend to lose your faith when the world seems unfair, and that’s what got him. It came from a serious place, but we were gonna write it in a very friendly way.” Koren said. “We certainly didn’t want to depress people. So I think that scared [the studio] a little bit, but to Jim’s credit, he totally understood that we were going to make a big comedy and thought everybody would connect with it.”

Furthermore, there were plans for Grace to come back as a hideous, realistically dead zombie after Bruce uses his powers to revive her. As the movie would have progressed, she would have regained her beautiful appearance. Carrey reportedly came up with that idea on his own.

But it was not to be. 2007’sEvan Almightyis a pseudo-sequel toBruce Almightyand itfeatures comedian Steve Carellin Bruce’s place, except now he’s tasked with rebuilding Noah’s Arc as he begins to resemble and take on the role of Noah from Biblical times. The film was a failure at the box office and faced weak reviews, pretty much ensuring another sequel was never made.
