Kaiju No. 8had a thrilling season 1 finale with episode #12, and a year later, it’s set to get right back on track with episode #13 and season 2 as a whole. All in all, it was a perfect way to close out a phenomenal first season, and episode #13 and season 2 as a whole are sure to be even greater follow-ups.

Kaiju No. 8is another episode that succeeds in both writing and animation. Episode #11 did a great job of continuing the drama of Kafka’s arrest, and going off of that,everyone working together to try and save Kafka was a perfect showing of how important he was to the Defense Force. Even if Kafka can’t fight as a human, he’s still done a lot to become someone people can admire, and seeing the lengths everyone went to in response to that is nothing but great.
As for animation, it was another episode that’s an easy contender for the anime’s best. While there wasn’t as much action as in previous episodes, the fight between Kafka and Isao perfectly illustrated Isao’s power with its gorgeous animation, the only thing matching it being the animation and direction of Kafka’s Kaiju form entering a berserker state. Between the great character work and incredible animation,Kaiju No. 8episode #11 does a perfect job of building into the finale, and sure enough,Kaiju No. 8episode #12 more than lived up to that.
What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode 12?

Kaiju No. 8episode #12, “Kafka Hibino”, picked up where episode #11 left off, with the parasitic Kaiju forcing Kafka into a powerful berserker state. Kafka’s new form made him too strong for even Isao to handle, and as everyone wondered why he hadn’t killed Kafka while he was in his human form,Kikoru realized that her father had secretly been testing Kafka’s self-control the entire time, although that decision was about to cost him his life.
Soon enough, Kafka was in a position to kill Isao, but before he could,Kafka finally regained control of his body and stabbed himself in the heart to save Isao’s life. Kafka reasserted that he was Kafka Hibino, not Kaiju No. 8, one last time before losing consciousness, and while Gen Narumi and the First Division wanted to finish Kafka off, Isao requested that Kafka receive medical attention before they did anything else.
Sometime later, Kafka awoke in the hospital with Isao at his bedside and a massive scar on his chest where he had stabbed himself. Isao said that it would have been impossible for a human to have survived a wound like the one Kafka inflicted upon himself, which proved that Kafka is now a Kaiju and no longer a human, but even so,Isao said that Kafka being a Kaiju didn’t mean he was an enemy.
In a flashback to before Kafka woke up, Isao and the rest of the higher-ups had another meeting whereIsao declared that Kafka would continue to fight as a soldier and not be turned into a weapon. Nearly everyone else protested the idea, but Isao pointed out that if more Daikaiju were going to keep appearing, then they needed someone like Kafka fighting alongside them. That, coupled with Mina’s glowing testimony of Kafka’s humanity, got Kafka’s execution deferred, something everyone in the Third Division celebrated while Kafka just fell back asleep with a smile.
While all of that was happening, Kaiju No. 9 was revealed to be hiding out in the city and becoming even more intelligent, even taking first place in the ranking of an online chess group. Feeling he now understood humanity’s intellect,Kaiju No. 9 revealed his plans to launch an attack against the Defense Force, and to go along with that, not only had Kaiju No. 9 taken on a new form, but he had seemingly cloned himself for extra assistance, as well.

All throughoutKaiju No. 8season 1, Kaiju No. 9 had slowly been developing from a powerful, yet clumsy enemy into someone who was equal parts brains and brawn, and with him setting up a full-fledged assault on the Defense Force while unveiling even more abilities in his arsenal, that will hardly be the kind of thing Kafka and everyone can come out of unscathed.Kaiju No. 9’s growth has made him a fantastic villain forKaiju No. 8, and season 2 will only make that more apparent.

Overall, there’s very little not to love aboutKaiju No. 8’s season finale. Not only was the animation and fight choreography as great as ever, but Kafka’s resolve to maintain his humanity was the perfect payoff to his character arc, as was the way everyone came together to support him.Kaiju No. 8episode #12 was a perfect finale for the first season, and that’s as true now as it was a year ago.
Kaiju No. 8season 1 was a great watch, and season 2 will be no different. Based on the promotional material that’s come out, season 2 is poised to continue and expand the story in increasingly exciting ways while maintaining the same gorgeous artwork and animation, so all in all,Kaiju No. 8season 2 has all the makings to be even better than the already phenomenal first season.Kaiju No. 8is one of themost hotly-anticipated anime of summer 2025for a reason, and hopefully, season 2 will live up to all of the hype and more.
