True Detectivecreator Nic Pizzolatto reveals that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are open to reprising their roles and that he already has a story for them. Season 1 of the HBO series revolved around Detective Rustin “Rust” Cohle (McConaughey) and Detective Martin “Marty” Hart (Harrelson) while investigating the murder of Dora Lange (Amanda Rose Batz). More than a decade later, season 1 is still widely considered to beTrue Detective’s best season.

While speaking on theNothing Left Unsaidpodcast (viaThe Hollywood Reporter),Pizzolatto shared that"I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day.“He revealed that he has spoken to McConaughey and Harrelson and that both actors are"open to it.“He clarified that he has not written the story yet and that it is not officially greenlit, but it is something that he and the show’s original stars have considered. It’s not something I’ve written or anything, it’s just in my head, and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it. I think the guys are open to it, it’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.

What This Means For True Detective

Cohle & Hart’s Next Story Doesn’t Align With The Show’s Current Direction

True Detectiveseason 5is already in the works, with filming expected to begin this year, followed by a release in 2027. As an anthology series, every season has focused on different characters and settings, and the upcoming season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York after season 4 was in Enis, Alaska. WhenPizzolatto’s contract with the show expired after season 3, he did not renew it, leading to a new creative vision, which he candidly criticized after the release of season 4.

Given these circumstances,Pizzolatto’s Cohle and Hart story will not becomeTrue Detectiveseason 5, and it could prove challenging for him to rejoin the series for a later season as well. Manyreviews forTrue Detectiveseason 4hailed it as the show’s best since season 1, and was seen as a step in the right direction after more divisive responses to seasons 2 and 3. HBO is currently set to continue building on season 4’s success without Pizzolatto, along with continuing to embrace the anthology format.

Our Take On Nic Pizzolatto’s Comments

Another Cohle & Hart Story Is Exciting, But Probably Won’t Happen

While it is exciting to hear that Pizzolatto has a story in mind for Cohle and Hart and that McConaughey and Harrelson are open to it, I doubt that it will happen, at least not anytime soon.HBO is probably not eager to work with Pizzolatto againafter his candid criticisms of season 4, and without a current contract, there is no obligation for them to rekindle this partnership.True Detectiveseason 1 is still considered to be an all-time great season of television and continuing Cohle and Hart’s stories threatens to undermine that legacy as well.
