AsMicrosoftlayoffscontinue to cast a shadow over many operationsat the company (especially Xbox, in addition topartner studios), users are reportingmass outages this morning for Outlook and Hotmail. Login issues are the primary culprit, as users are experiencing problems accessing their email or connecting to Microsoft’s servers.

Several thousand users are affected as Microsoft attempts to resolve the issue as soon as possible. While email outages aren’t particularly common, they’re generally a high-priority item for organizations like Microsoft to address, mainly because many of their employees rely on Hotmail and Outlook for communication.

Why Are Outlook and Hotmail Down?

Microsoft is “Working” On A Fix

Microsoft has apparently “identified the issue"and is “continuing to deploy the fix” as many go without email this morning. The issue isn’t fully widespread throughout all of Outlook and Hotmail thankfully, as many users are able to access their email without issue, especially outside of the United States.

These problems come at an inopportune time, asthe United States is just waking up and starting their workday on the west coast, while some users in Europe are still working. While Microsoft has not released the full reason for the outage, some are speculating that it could be a benign engineering problem.

So, what is working?Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Copilot, Microsoft To-Do, Skype, Office for the Web, Whiteboard, Phone Link, Teams, and Microsoft Lists are all up. Outlook and Hotmail are the only services with outages at the moment. Microsoft notes that “users may be unable to access their mailbox using any connection methods,” which extends to Outlook.com, Outlook mobile, and the Outlook desktop client.

Microsoft has also shared the full current status of the outage:“We’re continuing to apply the configuration changes to fix the underlying problem and completing additional validation efforts to ensure authentication components are properly configured. In parallel to the current deployment of the configuration change fix, we’re reviewing options to leverage an expedited deployment methodology in regions which are experiencing the highest levels of impact to provide the most effective relief where possible.”

Ideally,Microsoftshould settle this today. Given how this is a work stoppage issue for thousands of people, it’s already a top priority for the conglomerate to fix. Microsoft promises another update by 12:30PM ET, which is when it hopefully will be resolved.
