Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoninghas passed a major box office milestone. The new movie is the eighth installment in the espionage action franchise and features the return of Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt. TheMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningreleasekicked off over Memorial Day weekend with a $64 million domestic debut that was the best in the franchise. However, it had a 57.5% sophomore weekend drop, at which point it began trailing significantly behind the highest-grossing installment, 2018’sFallout.

PerDeadline, as of Saturday morning,Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningis projected to earn a 3-day total of $9.3 million at the domestic box office by the end of its fourth weekend. In addition to seeing it land at No. 4 on the chart for the weekend, this gross also pushes its cumulative domestic total to $165.3 million, making it onlythe eighth 2025 movie to pass the $165 million domestic milestoneso far. It is also closing the gap between itself andDead Reckoning Part One, which grossed $172.6 million in North America.

What This Means For Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

It Still Has A Way To Climb

WhileThe Final Reckoningseems set to surpassDead Reckoning Part One, which is its immediate predecessor, doing so would only make it the third lowest-grossing of theMission: Impossiblemoviesat the domestic box office rather than the second. AlthoughDead Reckoningis the fourth highest-grossing installment worldwide,it performed significantly worse than most of the preceding installments in its home territory. Below, see a breakdown of the domestic and worldwide performance of all seven previous installments in the franchise:

$180.9 million

$457.7 million

$215.4 million

$549.6 million

$133.5 million

$399.4 million

$209.4 million

$694.7 million

$195 million

$688.8 million

$220.1 million

$786.6 million

$172.6 million

$565.7 million

IfThe Final Reckoningdoes earn the $7.3 million needed to clear the domestic total earned byDead Reckoning Part One, which seems entirely within its power,it will only have to climb an additional $8.3 million in order to surpass the original 1996 installmentand become the fifth highest-grossing installment overall. Doing that is also a possibility, though it is unclear if it will be able to climb any higher than that so late into its run, as the gap between that and the next highest-grossing installment,Rogue Nation, is $14.1 million.

Our Take On The Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Milestone

While the Tom Cruise movieis still hitting major milestones and climbing the franchise chart four weekends into its run, it seems unlikely that it will be able to perform at the level required. The enormous reportedbudget ofMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningis roughly $400 million, making it one of the most expensive movies of all time andpotentially placing its estimated break-even point somewhere between $800 million and $1 billion. Given its current trajectory, it seems unlikely to hit even the lower end of that range worldwide.
