Summary
Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo system was a massive overhaul of the franchise’s combat mechanics. Introducing an assist character with their own specific moves to compliment a player’s chosen character created a wide array of new play style options. With certain Kameos able to perform combo breaks, ranged attacks, aerials, etc., they are able to fill in the gaps of certain base roster characters to round out one’s abilities. The system also allows players to pair up characters that wouldn’t normally be caught dead together. This could be a fun story element in a future NRS game besidesMortal Kombat 1, such as the long-demandedInjustice 3.
The Kameo fighters inMortal Kombat 1are not technically canonical besides their usage in Story Mode. InMK1’s Story Mode, characters are paired up depending on the situation so that there are always two fighters working together. If the Kameo system is taken into another NetherRealm Studios game likeInjustice 3, there is an opportunity to see some interesting scenarios. Potentially havingcharacters paired up in the Story Mode just like inMK1, but also featuring Kameo fighters from throughout the DC universe that are not in the story.Injusticegames of the past have included versions of characters from multiple universes both hero and villain, so there is limitless potential.

Injustice 3 Can Have Kameo Fighters With A Twist
As is the case in stories throughout the DC Universe, heroes must sometimes reluctantly form a tentative partnership with villains. IfInjustice 3featured a Kameo System, there could be fun moments within the Story Mode where this takes place. Seeing Superman teamed up with Lex Luthor, or Batman with the Joker would be interesting and provide some unique gameplay options. Entire chapters of the story where these characters are forced to cooperate could open the door to some very funny moments.
This hero and villain Kameo team-up could work if the story centered around some unbeatable new foe threatening all existence. Likethe plot ofMortal Kombat 1, a multiverse of timelines grants endless possibilities for supervillains to appear intent on total destruction. Perhaps multiple versions of characters could appear, like a heroic Joker or evil Batman just to make things more interesting. The combination of these characters' move sets would be fun to experiment with and master.

Injustice 3’s Multiverse of Character Combinations
In addition to the story-based Kameo Fighters inInjustice 3, there is also the potential to feature “non-canon” characters. Like the Kameo Fighters inMortal Kombat 1, they could be any version of any character throughout the universe. Technically,Injustice 3could featureMortal Kombatcharacterson the roster as they have crossed over several times before.MKand DC characters have a long history at this point and each time they meet they reference their past encounter. It could be interesting to see this continue into Kameo team-ups. Some character combinations to consider based onInjustice 2’s roster:
The Flash
Gorilla Grodd
Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo System would create a lot of opportunities for fun interactions inInjustice 3.Alternatively, the Kameo System could serve as a basis for the nextInjusticeto build upon. Innovative features such as the ability tocreate a character inInjustice 3could pair with Kameos to create an even more chaotic and customizable fighting game experience. Whatever it ends up being, NetherRealm’s next game is definitely something to look out for. Whether it will feature Kameo Fighters or something completely different is still a mystery at this time.
