What The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millenium Tales Means For Square Enix
Going Back To Its Roots With A Modern Twist
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millenium Talesnot only uses the pixel art style of JPRGsfromChrono Trigger’sera, but also the time-traveling story telling. It’s another title in the HD-2D style, which has been used for bothOctopath Traveler, whichalso got an announcementon Nintendo Direct, and theDragon Questremakes. It seems more titles will be using this HD-2D style, modernizing traditional JRPG pixel graphics.
Square Enix also made pixel remasters ofFinal Fantasy 1–6, although these are not in the HD-2D style.
The Millennium Talesis unique in that it is an action JRPG. The other titles using the HD-2D style have thus far been turn-based, with them sticking quite strictly with the old-school combat, fitting well withremakes of oldDragon Quests. This is likely the reason for the quick demo and survey, to receive as much feedback as possible for this relatively experimental title.
Our Take On The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales
Experimentation Breed Creativity
The Millennium Talescould be the perfect game for fans ofChrono Trigger, thanks to its relatively traditional aesthetic and time-traveling story. With its action JRPG focus, it will have something to separate it from thegreatness ofChrono Trigger,so it isn’t stuck in its shadow, and its experimental nature could create an interesting project that stands out. It’s also good to see Square Enix acknowledge its roots and continue using pixel art with the HD-2D format.
Having a demo and a survey also means that Square Enix is willing to listen to the community about this project, which is always heartening to see. HD-2D games should be perfect for the Switch 2’s handheld nature, and while co-op might be a gimmick, it is good to see more RPG encourage playing with friends. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Taleslooks to be an interesting projectwhich fans ofChrono Triggerin particular should keep an eye out for.
