The central duo in theSuper Mariofranchise have long been in a will-they-won’t-they-type relationship, and Nintendo has finally spoken up on the matter. The iconic video game developer and hardware manufacturer has long taken a very lascadical approach to its characterization and lore, but a surprising bit of info clears the air regarding the plumber and the princess.
Spotted by X (formerly Twitter) userKirPinkFury(viaMy Nintendo News), the Nintendo Today app states that"Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.“This sounds like a clear explanation that there is nothing romantic between the two characters, contrary to a broadly held assumption that Mario saved the princess many times out of personal obligation as well as duty.

Mario & Princess Peach Are Just Friends After All
Mario May Not Become Mushroom Kingdom Royalty
The relativelynew Nintendo Today appdelivers news to fans of the developer and publisher’s first-party games, includingSuper Mario,The Legend of Zelda,Splatoon, and more. While it’s usually more game-focused, users do occasionally enjoy a new tidbit of information about longtime characters.Nintendo is notoriously obtuse when it comes to its games' lore, typically putting gameplay above all other considerations.
Despite the two generally being considered something of a couple, the revelation that they are indeed just friends isn’t entirely unexpected. There’s very little between the two in-game that is overtly romantic, even if it’s clear they have a very close relationship. Princess Peach kisses Mario in a handful of games once she’s been saved, but this could easily be considered platonic.

Surely There’s A Little More To Mario & Peach’s Story
Nintendo Could Be Setting The Stage
Despite Nintendo clearing the air, there could be more in store for the non-couple.The Super Mario Bros. Movieisgetting a sequel, and the films could potentially put together a more connected story than Mario’s numerous games do. But there’s also the ending ofSuper Mario Odysseyto consider, in whichPeach rejects the proposals of both Bowser and Mario.
While Bowser is left on the moon, Peach invites Mario onto the Odyssey – perhaps just in thanks for rescuing her, but she clearly has affection for him still. A proposal suggests Mario wants more out of the relationship, and afuture 3DSuper Marioplatformercould pick up the loose end. It’s ultimately a rather superfluous discussion, but it’s interesting that Nintendo feels the need to clarify that the two leads of theSuper Mariofranchise are just friends. Maybe the company is just upholding its family-friendly image.
