It’s official:Borderlands 4will be released on the Switch 2 on July 02, 2025. The next entry in the irreverent looter-shooter series is set for a September 12 release on other platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S - a decision initiallybelieved to be related toGTA 6- with the Switch 2 version to follow just three weeks later.

The Switch 2 release date forBorderlands 4wasconfirmed in a video by Gearbox founder and presidentRandy Pitchford, posted on X (formerly Twitter). Pitchford expressed excitement about the increased portability provided by the Switch 2, and revealed a bit more about what fans can expect from the next entry on Nintendo’s newest console.

Borderlands 4’s October 3 Switch 2 Launch Isn’t Far Off

“It’s Not Next Year, It’s Not Even The Holiday”

Pitchford closes this makeshift announcement video with a fanfare, whooping and making air horn noises with his mouth. The reason is simple:Borderlands 4’s newly-confirmed Switch 2 release date is a lot sooner than anyone expected.

Call it fatigue after theSwitch 2’s first round of third-party games flopped: for the most part, players haven’t been convinced to pick up older games on the Switch 2by the promise of portability alone. This could beBorderlands' saving grace, as you won’t have to wait too long after its initial release to play it on the handheld.

Pitchford also expresses some excitement about the portability ofBorderlands 4on the Switch 2, saying, “you’re able to play Borderlands 4 wherever you want… that’s pretty cool.”

In the replies, Pitchford took the time to explain some ofBorderlands 4’s specs. He revealed that it will be playable in theSwitch 2’s mouse mode, allowing you to use the Joy-Cons like computer mice for more precise aiming and shooting. However, he also made it clear thatBorderlands 4will only run at 30 fpson the Switch 2, and that frame rate dips are possible in busier sections of the game.

The Switch 2 Release Schedule Is Shaping Up

More New Releases, Please!

This is happy news for Switch 2 owners, who are stilllanguishing withthe handheld’s limited library. With only one first-party new release at launch -Mario Kart World- the Switch 2 still doesn’t have all that much to play, althoughDonkey Kong Bananzahas helped a bit.

Borderlands 4is a pretty big new release, and October 3 is close enough to its PC and console release date thatit’ll still feel fresh by the time it hits the Switch 2. It’s not going to single-handedly save the Switch 2’s library, but betweenBorderlands 4and other games likeStory of Seasons: Grand BazaarandPokémon Legends: Z-Adue out later this year, it’s starting to come together.
