Undertaleis one of the most influential RPGs of all time and is still referenced to this day. It has gone on to inspire a slew of similarly influential RPGs, helping to popularize the dark, creepy,Mother-inspired subgenre of RPGs that took over Steam for quite a while. From its creative art direction to its unique gameplay mechanics and wildly ambitious narrative,Undertalestill strikes a chord with players today, and for good reason.

Of course, we all naturally seek out the next best thing after beating a truly legendary game, and while there are manygames likeUndertale, there are few that are as good. Fortunately, one of the games that directly inspiredUndertaleand its development is finally coming to Steam after 17 years, giving players not only the chance to see where it all started but also to play something akin to Toby Fox’s masterpiece.

OFF Is Coming To Steam On August 15

It Is One Of The Greatest Indie RPGs

OFFis a true cult classic video game, released all the way back in 2008 to critical acclaim from those who were lucky enough to play it. Not only is it one of thebest indie RPGsever made, butits dark, mysterious, brooding tone, gorgeous art, and genius storytelling have gone on to inspire a generation of indie developers, Toby Fox included. However,OFFwas never available on any of the major platforms, meaning that it has been hard to actually play for quite some time.

Fortunately, a remastered version is finally coming toSteamafter 17 years, giving fans and newcomers alike the opportunity to play it. This is a truly incredible, surreal RPG, the likes of which were extremely rare for the time, and still remains one of the best of its kind now. Of course, more importantly forUndertalefans,it also provides the perfect reason to finally see howOFFinspired Toby Fox all those years ago.

Undertale Owes A Debt To OFF

Toby Fox Was Inspired By It

Toby Fox has spoken before about howOFFinspiredUndertale, from the character designs to the surreality of its world, the unique approach to gameplay, and even story elements. In an interview posted to the officialOFFwebsite, Fox explained that “the character designs inspired [him] the most,” stating that Papyrus’s design is based onOFF’sfirst boss, Dedan, and Sans was “a bit inspired by Zacharie and the judge.” Additionally, the idea to use jazz music during the battle against Napstablook was inspired byOFF.

It is safe to say that withoutOFF,Undertalewould have been a very different experience. However, surprisingly, withoutUndertale,OFF’sremaster may have been different too, asToby Fox is composing new pieces of music for it.

While it remains to be seen if they’re as good asFox’sPokémonmusic, it is fun to see Fox become a core part of theOFFexperience after years of being a fan.OFFis a great game which will be made even better by this remaster, so I implore allUndertalefans to check it out when it launches on August 15.
