After Lance Reddick’s tragic death, thePercy Jackson & the Olympianscreator admits that the new Zeus actor is a fitting replacement. In the Disney+ show, Reddick played Zeus, the ruler of Mount Olympus and god of Lightning. He only had a short appearance in the show, but it was his last on-screen TV role.

Reddick was a renowned actor, having been active in Hollywood from 1982 to 2023. He starred in a variety of major productions, includingtheJohn Wickfranchise,Destiny, andThe Legend of Vox Machina. Tragically, Reddick died on July 19, 2025, due to complications related to heart disease.

After Reddick’s untimely passing, the show was forced to recast the character. In an interview withScreenRantfor the franchise’s 20th anniversary, Riordan explained that the new Zeus, Courtney B. Vance, is the perfect replacement and there was “a lot of respect around that casting choice”. Check out Riordan’s comments below:

Well, I mean, we’re very lucky that Courtney could come on board. He’s incredible. He’s going to be amazing in the role, and obviously Lance was a huge loss for the industry, especially for us, beloved, and has a connection with Tamara Smart, who is our Thalia Grace. And so I think everybody felt really good about that transition. There was a lot of love, a lot of respect around that casting choice, and we all feel good about it. Of course, it’s bittersweet, but I am confident that he’s going to make a perfect king of Olympus.

What This Means For Percy Jackson’s Zeus Recast

The process of recasting is often challenging, but it is especially difficult after an actor passes away. Marvel Studios was recently left with a potential recasting decision and eventually elected to initially avoidreplacing Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther). For Riordan, however, there was not necessarily a choice.

Zeus is an essential character inthePercy Jacksonmythos, and he grows increasingly prominent as the books continue. The adaptation will undoubtedly continue to feature Zeus, so the recasting was inevitable. Still, Riordan’s insistence that the process was conducted with great care is comforting, even as the show works to honor its late actor.

Vance, the recipient of a Tony Award, is a fitting replacement and should be able to perfectly adapt Reddick’s Zeus. TheLilo & Stitch(2025) andThe Tuskegee Airmen(1995)star has a proven ability to dominate any scene. His presence perfectly fits Zeus, which is why the “bittersweet” recasting should not be too jarring.

Our Take On Percy Jackson’s Zeus Recast

Saying goodbye to Reddick was undoubtedly extremely difficult for both the cast and the crew, especially when there was no choice but to recast him. As Riordan indicated,Reddick’s death was a “huge loss"for both Hollywood and thePercy Jacksonteam. Having to recast him at all was an unwelcome challenge, especially with such a young cast involved.

There is no way to know how Vance will approach the Zeus role, especially after Reddick left such an impression inPercy Jackson & the Olympiansseason 1. Riordan is approaching the situation with the respect it deserves, which is a good sign, but it will still be difficult to see a new star filling Reddick’s shoes.
