For nearly 40 years,Transformershas been one of the most recognizable toy and media franchises in the world. From animated series and blockbuster movies to countless figurines, the shape-shifting robots have seen it all. But over the years, some of the merchandise has taken an unexpected turn, leading to one of the strangest crossovers in recent figure history.
In 2023,Kotobukiya releasedTransformers Bishojo, a figure line reimagining characters likeOptimus Prime and Bumblebee as beautiful anime girls. The concept came from designer Shunya Yamashita, who was tasked with turning mechanical icons into humans without losing their essence. “It was important that, even at a glance, the silhouette and colors still felt like the character,” the designer explained.

Balancing Mechanical Detail With Human Charm in the Designs
Transforming robots into female characters required a careful mix of authenticity and creativity. “We pay close attention to personality through poses and clothing,” Yamashita said. Optimus' bun hairstyle with stray hairs echoed his antennae, while Megatron’s garrison cap, tie, and epaulets reinforced a strict, militaristic aura. Bumblee’s hoodie and loose socks captured a younger, more playful personality.
The line also kept the traditional faction differences in mind. “Autobots transform into working vehicles, and Decepticons into weapons. That contrast is cool, and we wanted to keep it,” Yamashita noted. Optimus Prime and Bumblebee were designed to look like friendly heroes, while Megatron’s outfit carried the weight of his role as a commanding, authoritative figure.

The Unique Challenges of Turning Optimus Prime Into Flesh and Blood
Of the first three figures, Optimus Prime proved the most difficult to design. “Megatron’s image came to mind right away, but Optimus took a lot of thought,” Yamashita recalled. Multiple drafts and feedback from dedicatedTransformersfans shaped the final design. Adding the container to the outfit at the request of the development team madeOptimus instantly recognizable.
When asked about other characters to adapt, Yamashita listed Soundwave and Shockwave from the original series, along with live-action film favorites Barricade and Blackout. “I especially loveTransformers Animated, so doing Bishojo figures in that stylized form would be really fun,” he said, hinting that the creative possibilities are far from exhausted.

Could Other Bishojo Transformations Be Waiting Just Around the Corner?
TheBishojofigure series began in 2009 and has reimagined over 100 characters from around the world. “It is an honor to include Transformers in the lineup,” Yamashita said. The line has introduced many fans to Kotobukiya’s approach, taking beloved properties and giving them a playful Japanese-style twist. MoreTransformers Bishojofigures are already planned.
Kotobukiya has applied theBishojotreatment to franchises likeMy Little Pony,Street Fighter, andG.I. Joe. Given the unexpected success of theTransformersline, it’s not hard to imagine more surprising adaptations in the future. For now, fans can enjoy Optimus, Megatron, and Bumblebee, while wondering which legendary characters might be next in line for a beauty makeover.
