Retro Halloween Masks Going on Sale from Marvel This Fall
Packaged as Variant Covers for Marvel’s September Releases
As seen above and throughout, these Marvel covers are drawn in the style of 1960s-era comic book character masks. Readers who dreamed of dressing up as Spider-Man or wanted tocosplay The Fantastic Four’s 60s costumesjust have to pick up any of Marvel’s September releases and carve out a page.
Marvel’s press release arrives with the following words from artist James Kerrigan:
Working on this cover series was a blast because it brought together two things I love deeply: Marvel and Halloween. There’s a nostalgic charm to the Halloween decorations of the 70’s, especially those vacu-form costume masks, which served as inspiration for this project. It was a joy to bring that retro, slightly spooky charm to life in a way that celebrates both the season and the art!
As Kerrigan points out, the nostalgia of the 60s and 70s Golden Age of Marvel’s comics helped inspire the concept behind this wave of variant covers.
The intention was to capture the retro feel of the era, whilst maintaining a spooky-appropriate tone for the Halloween season.

The nostalgia isn’t just derived from the style itself, but from prior pastimes of children carving cut-out masks from comic and magazine pages. It’s a practice from a bygone era that can now be recaptured, or experienced for the first time by this generation’s younger readers. Ultimately, it givesMarvelreaders their last-minute costumes for Halloween.
Each variant cover will go on sale from Marvel starting September 3.
