News of Gosling agreeing to star in the newOcean’s Elevenfilm was reported by Matthew Belloni for Puck. According to the report, Warner Bros. executives see theOcean’s Elevenrevival as a perfect fit for Warner Bros. Discovery’s new strategy of focusing on big theatrical releases that can generate millions at the box office, a strategy that led toBatgirlbeing canceled altogether. For instance, theOcean’s Elevenproject is part of a proven IP, will feature a star-studded cast, and has the potential for sequels or HBO Max spinoff shows.

Robbie’s entry in the heist franchise will also reportedly have a bigger budget thanSteven Soderberhg’sOcean’s Elevenfilms and Sandra Bullock’s recent spinoff,Ocean’s Eight. Though this may not line up with Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent cost-cutting measures, the intention is for the new film to feel “more theatrical and maybe even summer-worthy.” That said, the newOcean’s Elevenfilm will not cost nearly as much as Gosling’sThe Gray Man, which cost Netflix a staggering $200 million.

As previously mentioned, Robbie and Gosling most recently collaborated on the live-actionBarbiefilm, whereRobbie plays the titular character and Gosling plays Ken. However, the two acclaimed actors also starred together in Adam McKay’sThe Big Short, though Robbie only made a brief cameo as herself to explain some of the financial details of the story in a way audiences could follow. Director Roach has also worked with Robbie before as the director ofBombshell, which earned Robbie an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

So, while much of the world has been focused on the projects being canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery, several others are moving forward with a lot of money being invested in them. Time will tell if the newOcean’s Elevenfilm will live up to Warner Bros.' lofty expectations for its theatrical releases.
