InAmazing Spider-Man #7- by Joe Kelly, John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega and Joe Caramagna -Spider-Man takes on new villain Hellgate. Drawing Hellgate away from civilians, Spider-Man turns around and fires two full web cartridges, which explode on impact. The cartridges instantly unload an explosion of the unique adhesive, coating the target totally - in Hellgate’s case, dragging him down out of the air and into the ground.
Like real-world spider silk,Spider-Man’s webbing is proportionally far stronger than steel, making this incredibly powerful attack a surefire way to stop Peter’s lesser enemies, at the cost of whatever time it takes him to load another cartridge. Pete nicknames the gambit his"Web-Bob-Omb,“seemingly referencing theSuper Mariogames, which feature sentient Bob-omb villains (below.)
Sadly, Hellgate is no normal enemy, possessing incredible strength andspeed so impressive that he can hit Peter before his Spider-Sense warns him of danger. Hellgate showcases enough strength to tear free from two cartridges of webbing - a feat generally only accomplished by gamma mutateslike the Hulk and Spidey villain Digger- forcing Peter to get even more creative with asecondwebbing-based attack.
Spider-Man Follows Up with a Liquid Nitrogen Web-Bob-Omb
Peter Is Always Developing New Ways to Use His Powers and Skills
Spidey follows up his"Web-Bob-Omb"attack by hurling three containers of coolant at Hellgate, freezing him with liquid nitrogen. While Hellgate quickly manages to break free again, Spider-Man notes that his attacks are only failures if he doesn’t learn from them, intent on continuing the battle and thinking up new methods of attack.
Little is known about Hellgate so far, other than thathe refers to Spider-Manas"Honored Prince of the Steelsilk.“It’s possible that Hellgate was somehow created by a videogame Spider-Man has been shown playing (titled after Marvel’s classic seriesJourney into Mystery), but wherever he comes from, it’s clear the’s heard of Spider-Man as some kind of legendary hero, given his satisfaction with the creative ways Peter tries to beat him.
While Spider-Man’s fight with Hellfate will continue next issue,the story introduces a brand new all-out Spider-Man attack to Marvel lore, as Peter showcases the Web-Bob-Omb. And while the move and its follow-up the"Liquid Nitrogen Web-Bob-Omb"fail to beatthisenemy,Spider-Manfans will be looking forward to the next time Spidey gets to use the same move against less Hulk-tier villains like the Green Goblin or Doc Ock.
