Square Enix has made an official post for the 25th anniversary ofFinal Fantasy 9and has detailed several ways for fans to celebrate, but there is a giant piece that is missing, the one that fans have been hoping for since the NVIDIA leak back in 2021. Today, July 7, marks 25 years sinceFF9was released, and with a ton of rumors about a remake ofFF9being in development, many fans were hoping to see theannouncement of the purported remake today, but now, that seems unlikely.
According to the officialFinal Fantasy 9anniversary post on theFinal Fantasywebsite by Square Enix, there are numerous ways to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the game, like game sales, art projects, and other purchasable merchandise. Notably,there is no mentionof the rumoredFinal Fantasy 9remake. That doesn’t necessarily deny the existence of the rumored title entirely, but if it exists, Square Enix will likely be looking at a different time and place to announce it.

Still, the game has not been announced, andthere’s no mention of a remake or even a new teasein Square Enix’s latest post.

With the current state of Square Enix and modernFFtitles not performing financially well, at least not up to the company’s expectations, a lot of fans were hoping for a classic-style, turn-basedFFgame, something that has been missing for a long time, and most probably assumed that the rumoredFF9remake would scratch that itch. Still, all hope isn’t lost, as the Tokyo Game Show is in September, and Square Enix has had a significant presence at TGS in the past, as well as The Game Awards in December. We may have a ways to go until theFinal Fantasy 9remake announcement if it exists at all.
