Star Trek’snewest series will finally fill in the missing parts ofVoyager’stimeline. To commemorateStar Trek: Voyager’s30th anniversary, IDW is releasingHomecoming,a miniseries giving Janeway, Seven of Nine and the rest of the crew a proper send off. Along the way,it will fill in gaps in Seven of Nine’s history.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, IDW held a panel discussing the future of theirStar Trekcomics line, includingStar Trek: Voyager: Homecoming. The book’s writers, Susan and Tilly Bridges, spoke with attendees about it, and particularly Seven of Nine’s arc:

For example, we’re going to do a little bit more with Seven. Because at the end of Voyager, there’s another big gap. And as soon as you get to Picard, Seven is a very different person when we get there. So it’s fun to kind of thread her along the path a bit, as part of the story to that as well.

The Fate of Some ofVoyager’sCrew Remains a Mystery

In 1997, inspired by the success of the Borg-centricStar Trek: First Contact,Voyager’screative staff decided to introduce Seven of Nine, a former drone who was severed from the collective. Assimilated as a child, Seven of Nine only had vague memories of hertime before the Borg.Seven gradually rediscovered her humanity, and became an asset toVoyager.

Star Trek:Voyagerconcluded its run in 2001, and its finale saw the ship return to the Alpha Quadrant. However,Voyagermade it home in the episode’s last five minutes, which is hardly enough time to provide proper resolution to every story arc and character on the show.Voyager’sfinale left some fans wanting.

Harry Kim appeared in IDW’s adjective-lessStar Trekcomic, working for Starfleet Intelligence.

AfterVoyager, her crew would make brief appearances across theStar Trekfranchise. For example, Tom Paris appeared in an episode ofLower Deckswhile Janeway would appear inStar Trek: Nemesis. However, many crewmembers, such as B’Elanna and Harry Kim, are still unaccounted for, at least in canonical, on-screen media.

Star Trek: Voyagerwas the final show set in the 24th century, and the franchise would not return to that era for another 18 years, whenPicardseason one premiered. Fans were greeted with a darker vision of the galaxy: the Federation had suffered a devastating attack on Mars, and the Romulan homeworld had been destroyed.

Star Trek: Picard’sfirst season also established a new status quo for Seven of Nine. An ally of Picard’s, Seven was a member of the Fenris Rangers, a group of outlaw vigilantes who patrol the galaxy’s wilder eras, keeping the helpless safe. It was an interesting shift in careers for Seven, and fans never learned why she joined.

Eventually, Seven left the Rangers and officially joined Starfleet, serving as First Officer aboard theUSS Titan. As seen inPicard’sseason three finale, Seven was promoted to captain of theEnterpriseNCC-1701-G. At long last, Seven of Nine’s arc was seemingly complete, having gone from former Borg drone to captain of Starfleet’s flagship.

What Led Seven of Nine to Join the Fenris Rangers?

Star Trek: Voyager: HomecomingWill Explore Seven’s Post-VoyagerFate

Seven of Nine’s transformation is one ofStar Trek’smost inspiring, but it is also one shrouded in mystery.Homecomingwriter Susan Bridges was correct in her assessment that Seven was a very different person. Seven had been through trauma in the Delta Quadrant, and did not have an easy go of it in the Alpha Quadrant either.

Yet whileStar Trek: Picardmay have filled in some gaps in Seven’s history, it did not go into detail, which is whereHomecomingcomes in.

The Bridges have stated that the series will explore Seven’s time afterVoyagerreturns, and presumably will show the factors that led to her joining the Fenris Rangers.

Star Trek: Voyager: HomecomingWill Give Fans More Seven of Nine

The final minutes of thePicardseason three finale functioned as a backdoor pilot for a newStar Trekshow led by Seven of Nine. So far, unfortunately, this program has failed to materialize, much to the disappointment ofVoyagerfans. WhileHomecomingmay not be what they are looking for, it will give them more Seven nonetheless.
