Marianneis a mostly unremarked-upon horror TV show with a rareRotten Tomatoesscore of 100% and, even more notably, it’s received the seal of approval from the horror legend himself, Stephen King.TV shows don’t often get the 100% onRT, and if they do, they’re almost never a horror TV show.

Horror TV is not easy to do. Horror depends on tension, andit’s very difficult to keep stringing out the tension week after weekwithout the audience getting bored. Some shows do nail this difficult task, however, and if one of the best horror writers ever gives you kudos, you know you did something special.

Emma (Victoire Du Bois) looking sheepish in Marianne

King Tweeted That He Thought Marianne Was A Lot Like His Own Stories

Stephen King has never been shy about saying how he feelsabout horror TV shows and movies, and while this can be painful when he is not a fan, it also means thatwhen he applauds something, he is being honest. When it comes toMarianne, King is a fan, sharing on hisXaccount,

“If you’re one of those sickos–like me–who enjoys being scared, MARIANNE (Netflix) will do the job. There are glints of humor that give it a STRANGER THINGS vibe. It also has (I say it with all due modesty) a Stephen King vibe.”

That is some high praise from King. If there’s a show that can even scare him, then it’s likely the show will end up scaring most horror fans. Comparing it toStranger Thingsalso gives some good insight into what kind of show we’re walking into, though I will warn thatMarianneis much more frightening.

It definitely has some similarities to King’s style, with paranormal and frightening events happening to seemingly innocent people. The characters inMariannehave a lack of control that is emblematic of a lot of King’s writing. The horror is more effective when we don’t know why it’s happening to someone.

While taking a break from writing, Emma is approached by a childhood friend who says that her mother believes she is the witch from Emma’s novels.

Sinister and paranormal events quickly follow, andMariannenever lets up on its tense atmosphere. There are horror visuals inMarianneas frightening as anything being put on the big screen, and the strong, mysterious story keeps you watching from behind your fingers. No wonder Stephen King liked it.
