Supernaturalhad its fair share of villains, but one is more terrifying than all the rest. Having run from 2005 to 2020, the 15-season show became a staple for the CW during its run, despite having originally been planned to have just five seasons. Leading men Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) stayed with the show throughout its entire run.

WhileSupernaturalseason 16 is unlikely, the show did have an official spinoff in 2022,The Winchesters. It was canceled after just one season, bringing an apparent end to the franchise. Despite lacking any clear follow-up, the stars continue to take questions aboutSupernatural, as the show remains prominent in pop culture.

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) speak with Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) in Supernatural

During a Fan Expo Boston panel, whereScreenRantwas in attendance,Supernaturalstar Mark Pellegrino shared some secrets about his roles. Having played both Lucifer and his vessel, Nick, he believes that one of the show’s villains was more haunting than all the rest. Check out his comments below:

I think Nick was scarier than Lucifer to be honest… He was so twisted up by power and so driven by his obsession to feel what he felt when Lucifer occupied his vessel that he was willing to do anything to get there, and that’s a scary dude.

What This Means For Lucifer And Supernatural

Lucifer was meant to be one of the biggest villains in the series, alongside his rival, Michael. Even after season 5 ended with Lucifer’s imprisonment, he routinely reappeared in the show with new motivations and vessels. Even after being killed and banished to the Empty, he always found a way to return, fulfilling his ultimate purpose.

Nick, on the other hand, was not a fated enemy of Michael, nor was he meant to be involved in the apocalyptic war at all. Instead, he was an ordinary human being who agreed to serve as Lucifer’s temporary vessel. After Lucifer’s death, however, Nick became a serial killer and attempted to reunite with the archangel.

If Nick truly isSupernatural’s scariest villain, it is because he is the most realistic villain in its history. He is simply a grieving widower who fails to come to terms with the death of his loved ones. Nick’s brutal acts were designed to alleviate his pain and served as a desperate attempt to recover from his many losses.

Lucifer, a biblical figure, does not feel nearly as palpable as an ordinary man who turns to cruelty to cope with loss. Most people will never encounter an archangel, a demon, or a werewolf. As a regular person, Nick is simply far more intimidating because he is more realistic.

Our Take On Supernatural’s Scariest Villain

Any show’s scariest villain will always be up for debate, especially when it comes to amonster-of-the-week serieslikeSupernatural. Many viewers will argue that Crowley, Chuck, or Azazel were the scariest in the show’s run. Others might argue that the clowns were more terrifying than anything else, and Sam would surely agree.

Still, it is difficult to disagree with Pellegrino’s take, as Nick truly was a haunting figure. He was intended to be nothing more than a throwaway vessel, but he evolved into a complicated and truly devastating antagonist. He remains one ofSupernatural’s scariest figures because he is undoubtedly the most realistic.
