Morgan Spector is"thrilled"by the fact that hisThe Gilded Agecharacter Georg was shot in a violent cliffhanger ending for the penultimate episode of season 3. The HBO series was recentlyrenewed for season 4, but the fate of Spector’s character hangs in the balance as we head into the finale next week.
Now, Spector is responding to this shock twist that saw George answer the door of his home and get shot by a courier. Jones was also shot and, of this twist, Spector tellsTVLinehe’s"thrilled"by the turn of events. Spector tells the publication that this is accurate to the period, so it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

“[It] just didn’t feel like the kind of thing that would happen onThe Gilded Age.I’m thrilled the more we get to expand the world.
In an interview withVariety, Spector expanded on his reaction, saying audiences"should be very worried"heading intoThe Gilded Ageseason 3 finale.

You should be very worried. In the 19th century, gunshot wounds from up close were extremely dangerous. Many people didn’t survive them. I don’t have a contract for next season yet, so who knows?
Those final scripts were a little delayed, so it took some time before I got them. But when I read the ending for that episode, I was just thrilled, because it’s such a left turn for our show. It’s totally historically accurate. This kind of thing happened during that era, but it doesn’t feel like ‘The Gilded Age.”

What The Shooting Means For The Gilded Age Season 3
George’s fate is left unconfirmed when the credits roll, but this kind of violence is somethingThe Gilded Agefans have become used to over the last couple of weeks. In the previous episode,John Adams was unceremoniously killedby a horse and carriage while saying goodbye to his former love interest, Oscar van Rhijn.
AsThe Gilded Ageheads into its finale, the stakes have been significantly raised for all the characters, with both shocking events serving to reshuffle the dynamics of many of the characters. Now, the question of whether or not George will survive will be one of the big questionsThe Gilded Ageseason 3 has to answer in its finale.
Our Take On George’s Fate In The Gilded Age Season 3
George and Bertha Russellhave been central characters since the beginning ofThe Gilded Ageand taking George off the board would upend everything for Carrie Coon’s character. At this stage, it’s hard to tell exactly where the series will go. As Spector notes, gunshots like this are quite deadly, especially in the era the show is set in.
After also killing off John Adams so recently,The Gilded Ageis really going for broke and upping the ante in all areas. Additionally, renewal was never guaranteed for the HBO series, so it’s possible that writers envisioned this plot as part of a potential endgame for Bertha and George if season 4 never came to fruition.
While George’s fate may be confirmed next week, whether he lives or dies, this shooting is sure to leave an impact on Bertha and the social lives of all characters onThe Gilded Age. Losing Spector would be tragic, but the HBO series, in its third outing, feels more confident than ever.
