The Handmaid’s Taleseason 6, episode 4 picks up right where episode 3 left off, with June, Luke, and Moira leaving Gilead once again. Upon their arrival, however, they learn that Mayday is planning their next resistance plot: a raid on Jezebel’s. Thus, Mayday has to decide who will go back in and warn the women at Jezebel’s. Meanwhile, Commander Lawrence works on gettingthe New Bethlehem projectoff the ground, while continuing to manipulate Gilead from the inside.

Is There Any Hope For Luke & June Saving Hannah

Or Will She Stay Stuck In Gilead?

June and Luke’s main goal throughoutThe Handmaid’s Talehas been to save Hannah, who is currently at a school for training Wives in Gilead. After several seasons of attempting to reach this goal, the duo doesn’t seem to be any closer to Hannah. InThe Handmaid’s Taleseason 5, a series of planes were set to go in and rescue some Gileadeans, including Hannah. However, the planes were shot down thanks to the involvement of Commander Lawrence. Mayday is already working on another plan, although it won’t directly save Hannah.

Mayday’s next plan involves using Jezebel’s to find out what Commanders were involved with shooting down the planes, with them later killing them. While this won’t directly lead June to Hannah, it could end up helping in the long run. Wiping out some powerful Commanders may weaken Gilead, hurting their defenses and allowing Mayday’s next rescue plan to work. SinceJune’s main goal has been to rescue Hannah, the mystery of whether or not she will probably won’t be solved untilThe Handmaid’s Talefinale. However, the sequel bookThe Testamentsalready provides an answer.

Lawrence’s Quote At The End Of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, Episode 4 Explained

It Is From A Little Princess

Commander Lawrence provides a voice-over during the credits ofThe Handmaid’s Taleseason 6, episode 4, with him reading a book. This book isA Little Princess, a 1905 children’s book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The book follows a young girl who is sent to a boarding school by a British Army Captain, with her getting into various situations while there. The excerpt that Commander Lawrence’s reads is from the opening of the book, with the voice-over actually being a callback to an earlier scene where Lawrence reads the book to his daughter.

When Lawrence reads the book, he tells his daughter that it was a favorite of Eleanor, his late wife. This signals that Lawrence is still holding onto the memory of Eleanor, whose death seriously shook his faith in Gilead. While reading the story, the episode cuts to Janine. Since the passage is about a girl who has been aged due to her life experiences, this parallels Janine and the other Handmaids who have had their lives and freedoms taken away from them. Finally, this book signals that Lawrence is raising his daughter to idolize powerful women.

What’s Going On With Serena Joy & High Commander Wharton

Will They Start A Romance?

Serena Joy continues to be one of the most interesting characters inThe Handmaid’s Tale, and her new connection with High Commander Wharton makes her even more interesting. After they met in thefirst three episodes,The Handmaid’s Taleseason 6, episode 4 seems to be setting up a romance between the duo. Cooking and dancing in the rain proves that Wharton isn’t a typical Commander, and Serena Joy seems to be falling for him.

However, Wharton’s intentions are still mysterious. Commander Lawrence’s New Bethlehem plan proves that Serena Joy is a valuable asset due to her influence over Gilead, and Wharton could be hoping to utilize this influence. The Commanders of Gilead have proven to be manipulative, and it is possible that Wharton could be manipulating Serena Joy. However, it is impossible to say until more ofThe Handmaid’s Taleseason 6 releases.
